Materials from 3ds Max

Good day all

I am running into an issue with materials getting lost when Importing a FBX file.  My workflow is as shown below

  1. The design originates in Autodesk Inventor with materials added.
  2. The design is then imported to 3ds Max 2018
  3. Animations are added and Materials edited / assigned
  4. A FBX file is exported using the Game Exporter option
  5. The FBX file is then imported into VRed 2018

What I then see in VRed is a gold coloured model that seems to have lost all the materials, see image.

Is there a setting in either 3ds Max or VRed that has to be enabled to bring the materials through from a FBX?

Is there a better workflow to get an Inventor model into VRed with animations and materials?

Hey

I'm a bit lost or maybe but you can not import chrome/glass/etc matterials from 3ds max to vred. They will be simplified in to phongs/etc with matching diffuse/transparency/etc settings + textures.

The best thing to do is use scanling and standard max materials. They will be the closest one to vred ones meaning any texture maps in diffuse/bump/etc most likely will be preserved. But then you still have to set them up again in vred.

A good idea might be to use assets manager > materials in vred and use consistend material names.

Then you can just repalce materials by name...

Good luck, hope this helps.
