How to get prevent brush artifacts on rounded cylindrical objects?

In detail shots there are always problems with brushed metal artifacts. On large radii the radial mapping is not shown clearly. There are always waves and cracks.
What can you do? Or is this a bug in the material mapping?

Hello @s.baldauf,

 

thanks for the post and the screen shot. Basically, those artefacts of the brushed metal are caused by two factors:

 

First factor is the polygon resolution of the object. Low poly objects show more artefacts than higher tessellated objects:

Second factor is the missing "edge blend" function of the triplanar mapping in the brushed metal material. In compare with a plastic material, this functionality is missing in the brushed metal and could help to "smooth" the overlapping edges of the triplanar mapping:

I will log this missing feature as enhancement request at the dev team. For now, I would recommend to increase the polycount of objects which show artefacts, especially if you are rendering close-up's.
