Linetype loosing shapes when pasting into drawing

Anonymous

When grabbing a certain line drawin on a linetype, I loose the shapes of that custom linetype . I've read countless answers and posts but none work for me. Changed LTSCALE, PSLTSCALE, MSLTSCALE, tried using lisp and vlx files with no luck. I am on 2016LT. Any help much appreciated. I attached a block with a shape using that linetype.

Hi @Anonymous,

It does look like this linetype is looking for a character 'Half Dash' and it is apparently not found.  This means that the font ist is trying to reference is either missing or damaged.

The only fonts I see in the file are Arial, Romans, and Architxt.

When I copy and then paste this content into a new file the linetype shows up fine. I am guessing that it it referencing ARIAL.

What would you recommend to be the best option to get it to work? I tried looking at the Arial font but they look the same in both drawings.

HI @Anonymous,

In looking at the fragment (*ATI-A-FP01$0${ Half Dash },{ Half Dash }) of the linetype definition I am able to extract, I see that the line liekly originated in this file: ATI-A-FP01$0$.

Do you have this file that you can share? Perhaps I can extract more information for the linetype definition.  I suspect that to get this working properly you will have to rebuild the definition.

I do not. This was a line type copies from another drawing and saved into a block. And now i am running into problems where it will work in some drawings but in other it will not.

Hi @Anonymous,

I suggest you create  a new definition using a shape file instead of using one from a font that doesn't seem to exist or have the character definition any longer.

I tried this very quickly using a rectangle with an exploded hatch.  I used the MKSHAPE feature to create a shape. Then I inserted the shape into my drawing and copied it to a similar location as the original checked line. Then I used the MKltype to create anew linetype.  Mine is obviously not finished or identical to the one you have now but I made it as an illustration on how to recreate this on our own.

I think i might need a crash course in Custom Line Types but thanks for all the help. Just still puzzled why the line types just font carry over when pasted.

Hi @Anonymous,

I too wish I knew why this behaves like this but unfortunately, I am unable to extract the full linetype definition to see how it is actually constructed.

Try the steps I outlined and let me know where you get stuck. I am not an expert on creating complex linetypes but I am happy to help wherever I can.

Hi,

Did some research on this and what i found is 'weird' (cause i can not find any documentation on this)

the linetype "ATI-A-FP01$0${ Half Dash }" is not defined in database as complex linetype (it defined as standard linetype) it's weird cause it contains solid areas but these solids is not seen in the linetype database

what can i see though is some relation to DGN linetypes.

Very weird. I also tried following the steps and I cannot use MKShape or MKltype i am running LT.

Hi @Anonymous,

Having never tried this in LT before I just assumed it would work. I am dead wrong!  This has to be done in full AutoCAD.  You can certainly download a trial of AutoCAD to get this created though. I apologize for any confusion.

If you have the shape created in your drawing and want to share it I can go through the extra steps for you as well.

See attached. I just dont know how it would invert it every other shape along the line like the one I sent over.

Hi @Anonymous,

In working more with this shape to create a similar linetype, I have determined that because hatches are not allowed in shape files I am not able to get sufficient density of lines for this to work nicely.  Even when I got a dense pattern to work in a shape, I realized AutoCAD linetypes will not truncate part of the shape at the end of a line like the Microstation linetype that you provided.

Capture.PNG

For instance, if you look at this image, the line on top (the Microstation one) ends in a partial shape at the right side. AutoCAD can not do that.

So, if you really need this functionality, I suggest you stick with this linetype (renamed in my file) and use Design Center to bring it from file to file.

I am sorry that I can't provide you with a better answer on this issue.

Thank you for the help. Although the line doesn't truncate at the ends, its actually the way the original behaved. As far as bringing it in through the design center, how does the process go? I not sure I've ever done that. I always just copied and pasted from drawing to drawing.

hi @eksplosion310,

DesignCenter is a great tool for bringing things in from other drawings.  I made a quick video that shows how you can use it to bring a variety of things from other drawings such as blocks, layers, text styles, and in this instance  - linetypes.
