Is there a better icon creation method?

I was curious to know if there's a way to create better looking icons for ribbon panel/toolbar buttons than the old way if filling in pixels with the pen/line and generic colors method? Autodesk default icons are really nice and have 'shades of colors' etc that make the icons look more realistic. When I create them I use the regular colors and there's no blending really. I was hoping there was a newer way to create more realistic looking images on the button...

Thanks.

@Anonymous You can literally use any image editor out there that you like to use all the time: you just have to remember the final result needs to be 32x32 (pixels) in size which will have some impact on any complex "blending" etc. you might wish to implement.

Start right now.

I always created the custom buttons within AutoCAD, zoom in and regen with the button filling the entire screen, take a screenshot, and paste it into MS paint and save it as a png or whatever.

I didn't use it that often, and forgive my memory if I'm incorrect...but I used a solid hatch as a background for the contents of the button. The hatch has a fairly decent assortment of color blending.

My 2 cents. Good luck.

I use Paint.net and tend to shrink images down to 32x32. Eg set size 32x32 and 2 letter text.

Hi,

Take a look to Syncfusion Metro Studio, it's free: Metro Studio .
