AutoCAD MEP 2017 here.

I am having issues with several dwgs, quite slow and combersome... some of which are over 40 MB in size.

I've done all I know to do to clean it up.

Purged Regapps

Purge Orphaned Data.

Command line purges with all options, three times etc.

Export the whole dwg back over itself.

Import exploded into a clean dwg file using no template imperial.

I checked on DGN Purge using the hotfix, but apparently it's been incorporated into AutoCAD.

Looking closer at the dwgs tables it appears like that are a number of complex blocks that have many nested Surfaces.

I'd to test my theory by deleting and purging the block having Surfaces to see if that shrinks the dwg file and smooth out it behavior.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I would have blamed it on the regapps.  I'm glad you had the knowledge to purge them, but sorry to hear that the slowness remains.

I'm still running only 2002, so I have nothing to offer except "Best of luck."

Well... the drawing file is still quite large, however the sluggishness has left for the most part.

The third party software we use, in a recent release the RECOVER command broke the custom objects so we had quit using it.

The new release just installed fixed this. A RECOVER repaired the dwg enough to be not be sooo slllowww.
