3D to 2D Conversion (Similiar to Viewbase or Flatshot Command) that retains layer/colors of 3D

I deal with complex 3D models of industrial equipment and am required to generate 2D installation drawings. I constantly have situations where I need to retain the layers/colors of the 3D items when converting to 2D (I typically use the VIEWBASE Command or Flatshot Command). I haven't been able to find a way that works, I normally have to spend a lot of time manually selecting lines and changing the layers/colors. I don't have Revit, but I've seen 2D drawings produced from Revit and they retain the layers and colors of the 3D model, does anyone have an idea as to how to accomplish this with AutoCAD?

Not a great answer but if you have revit you can reference a dwg set it on a sheet and export it back to an autocad dwg. Works really well for me.
