DocBar from CADwerx discontinued - an Absolute Shame!!!

I've been using docbar for many years now. It is a huge, huge productivity tool, making tabs for each drawing (much like excel) and allowing for the rapid movement from one drawing to the next. Further, it had the benifit of saving dwgs with zooms extended before closing.

Does anyone know of an alternative that works as well as docbar? The autocad quick view routines are okay, but they could stand to have many more features!!!! (i.e. close all, no save, close all + save all, close + save only selected, tab view, etc, zoom extents on close, etc!!!)

Come back, Byron!!!! Edited by: mikeshick on Apr 20, 2010 12:11 PM

According to the last cached copy of Byron's web site,
he went out of business, as a result of lack of sales.

AFAIK, the only noteworthy thing he offered was DocBar,
so when the Autodesk Useless Baggage Division released
that piece of garbage they call MdiTabs, it became much
harder to justify paying for document tabs.

So with regards to Byron's misfortunes, You can all thank
Shaan Hurley for that.

While it was myself and my AcadXTabs that was Shaan's
intended target, Byron was unfortunately the one that was
ultimately harmed the most by that moron's antics.

Tony,

It is unfortunate you use this opportunity to name call and make opportunistic and baseless accusations.

There was no targeting other than a customer request and a developer having an example tool using an AutoCAD API. For over 15 years Autodesk has provided free bonus tools to customers developed by Autodesk employees many on their own time testing APIs as well as from outside customers and developers. We have provided bonus tools that are fairly simple and there are always the opportunity for others to develop a better tool or solution for free or a price. Even you have benefited by including code from an Autodesk employee and used in your tool.

We do not intend to stop developing and providing free bonus tools or other technologies such as the ADN Plugin of the month and Autodesk Labs technologies. This is nothing more than giving the customer what they want, soliciting feedback on potential future product features, and developers creative examples of Autodesk APIs not going to waste but shared.

The simple API Bonus Tool MDITabs is still available for AutoCAD 2007 to AutoCAD 2011 (the AutoCAD 2010 version works on AutoCAD 2011)

Shaan,
I have used Docbar for 4 years now and it has helped me with the speed of plotting like none other. It is really helpful to send 25 to 30 plots to the printer within a matter of 15 seconds. Like, previously mentioned, I to, use it to save and close the same group of drawings in the same amount of time. Where this program really paid off was opening and closing drawings, using sheet set manager. It improved the speed 10x. Working on a sheet set of over three hundred or more sheets. It was a time saver and a head ache relief. I am really sorry to hear he went out of business. We liked the program so much that we purchase 7 licenses for our design group.

I know it is hard to meet everyones wishes but a look into what was offered by Cadwerx would not be a bad idea either. Aren't you always looking for newer, better, faster....production. I would like to think we are all working toward the same goal.

Thanks for the information on the new tabs. I will have to learn something new to keep up with the speed and productivity time that DocBar provided me.

I concur wholeheartedly. Except I didn't use for plotting. Opening and closing was huge benefit for us!

Anyone have the 64 bit version they could send me? I have the 32 bit but just got a new laptop and it's bugging me not being able to use it.

I tried posting the installation file but Autodesk says it is to large to upload. It's just under 2MB and doesn't compress much smaller when zipped. It should be small enought to send via email. Send me an email at vanpatter@coffman.com and I will reply back with the file attached.

I was very dissapointed myself when I went to Cadworx website looking for a new version and saw that it had been closed. I purchased a site license years ago and found it interesting that Byron did not charge for upgrades. He should have followed Autodesk's lead and make everyone pay an annual fee to use it after they pay to purchase it!

I have used the Docbar for many years myself and have found this tool to be a huge time saver as well. I prefer the thumbnail view and float it over to my other screen to free up valuable screen space. I loaded version 2010 into AutoCAD 2011 just to see if it would run and it appears to be working.....for the moment that is.

I just added it to my startup suite. Just type "appload" at the commmand line and you will see it in the dialogue box. Look in the original installation folder for the .arx file. I never did figure out where the install routine puts it so it loads automatically.

I know this thread is a year old, but i'm going nuts without Docbar. My company just switched to Autocad 2011 and Mditabs is just not cutting it. Docbar had so much more to offer.

Has anyone else gotten Docbar 2010 working with Autocad 2011?

Current system is running Windows 7, 64 bit. I emailed Byron today asking if I could get the 2010 update, but i'm not really expecting a response...

Tony and Shaan:

perhaps you could discuss your differences offline. Business is business and some products get overlooked for various reasons.

This was an excellent 3rd party application that we have used for several year. I have to agree with some of the other comments.

Autodesk should contact Byron and roll this out as one of the Plugins of the Month. Royalties could be paid directly to Byron for each download.

Problem solved. Get it done.
