UPDATE PART NUMBER during Rename and Copy Design - checked by default

UPDATE PART NUMBER during Rename and Copy Design - checked by default

The "Update Part Number" check box should be checked by default.

Currently if the user forgets to check this box will generate two different files with the same value in the "Part Number" field.

If two such files are inserted into the same IAM files, then Inventor in BOM will show 2 items of item with the original part number , besides, when exporting BOM to ERP system, ERP will always use element with original Part Number.

It is very, very dangerous looking at the whole production process, ordering and stocking parts.

@j_spiradek With the New Copy Design command Part Number is updated by Default rule. So the request is only for Rename. Is my understanding correct?

Thanks for the confirmation.

@Senthil_Kumar: If we wish to use other rules in Copy Design, we cannot superimpose any other rule to what the Default Rule now has (to update Part Number). The problem is, Copy Design is set in such a way that within a rule set any rule will be read as an if/elseif/elseif/elseif chain... by placing the rule of "Update Part Numbers to match File Names on top of the rule set, any other rules under it will not be executed!

@Gabriel_Watson, Can you give me an example of a rule set you have configured in Copy Design which only the Update Part Numbers rule is the only thing that is applied?

A little background, we use a custom iProperty "B10 Template Type" to activate automatic categorization of design files in Vault. Mechanical Design templates will be auto-categorized as such if the property reads "MD", and Advance Process files will work similarly if checked in with B10 written as "AP".

Now, for the rule sets, this is the scenario here.

Rule Set "AP to MD" has three Rules internally, but only the first one ever applies:

Even if I merge all of the Rule Criteria under one single Rule for the Rule Set, only the first Rule Criteria to pass will activate and cause a change in properties. Below are the other custom Rules "If Category is AP, reset" and "If AP, B10 is reset".

In your example what triggers the "Default rules" in the rule set?

The Default Rules is an exact copy of the Default Rule Senthil mentioned above, which comes as default with Vault.

Ok, so I think I understand your comments however what you are looking for is different than this idea.

The Default Rule Senthil mentioned is, obviously, in its own Rule Set which you copied in your Rule Set. As you already pointed out, the Rules in the Rule Set act like an If Then ElseIf logic.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking for a set of behaviors, like Part Number Mapped to File Name, to run regardless of the which Rule is triggered when the Rule Condition is true. Is that correct?

Also, you can add the Part Number Mapped to File Name in the behaviors of the other two rules and accomplish the same thing.

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding what you are asking for.

Ok, I realized I had to add all the criteria and effects into a single rule in a rule set. Now it seems to work. Thanks for looking into this @ihayesjr

How do I turn make this go back to how it behaved before??  I don't want it to change the part number when I copy design? @YounesYammouri @ihayesjr

@Anonymous ,

In the Rename dialog, select no in the Update Part Number drop-down list.

In Copy Design, create a new Ruleset that doesn't update the Part number.

ilogic- assembly rule - part numbers update after design copy.

Hello,

Having trouble trying to figure out how to have my iLogic update the part numbers contained in the rule after a design copy or a save as.

-If the part number changes it causes the rule to fail because it can no longer reference the original part number.

-I cannot break the link of drawing number and file name either. It will mess with our numbering scheme rules and cause confusion.

How do you get:

Parameter("67003015-3:1""d1000") = Width

To change to, (example):

Parameter("24003020-3:1, "d1000") = Width

After a copy design or a save as?

The number after the dash will always be the same along with the dimension name.

Hi,
we switched from Vault Basic 2018 to Vault Basic 2020 about 1 month ago.
We have the "Update Part Number" permanently activated.
But it should be permanently deactivated.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the tip from @Anonymous.
Is there another way to change this?

Greetings
Lars

@llinz

Can you provide an image to illustrate what you are seeing?

There are no settings to permanently activate or deactivate this setting.

I've selected No the Update Part Number drop-down list.

But the next time it was activated again.

Under the corresponding help for the function there is also
that the function can be activated optionally.

It is activated each time the Rename dialog is executed. It is not an option that once is it turned off it will remain off.

The problem is that it defaults to changing part number. It would be better if it just remembered what setting you had it at last time rather than defaulting to one. It guarantees it will not work for some people if it is set to one of them.
