Opening different Revisions of the same Drawing as temp file names

Opening different Revisions of the same Drawing as temp file names

Explained Reason/Problem: Currently if you open the latest revision of a dwg file, Vault will open it no problem. But if that same user tries to also open Rev B while rev C is still open, the program doesn't do anything or just displays the current version of the file that is already open. This is confusing to non-everyday users. They don't know that you have to Save As rev C, then open Rev B so they can compare differences. (In this case the revision block wasn't detailed enough.)

Suggestion:

If you have opened a Rev C of a dwg. Then you want to open a Rev B version too. Please add a way for Vault to automatically assign the older revision a temporary file name.

How: Have Vault detect if the file the user is trying to open is a historical version. It would automatically download that file as the same file name but with a Rev X on the end. X being whatever revision it's stored as.

Thanks for posting the idea. Have you tried using "View in Window" to open multiple revisions\versions of the same file?

@ihayesjr , Yes, but in some cases, you get the error: "Unable to view the file selected. Click the 'Open' button to view with an external viewer." when switching it to older revisions. This would require updating the visualization files for those older revisions. I have found this isn't as helpful for a end user. Especially since the pop-up viewer doesn't have the update button available.

I have a feeling you'll bring up the other option up too:

You can also use the View tab. And when that same error appears, they could technically press the "Update..." button. I still get confused end users contacting me about this too.

Also Vault thin client doesn't show the other revisions as an option either for some reason but that maybe another topic. I'm just citing that Vault thin client doesn't help either.

PS: How would I mass update views for everything in our vault as the admin? I know how to do it for latest files. But older revisions seem impossible unless you open each one and press update in the view tab.

Go to the History tab and click the Show All Versions button.

Right-click on an older version of the file that doesn't have a DWF and select View in Window.

Inventor View or Inventor Read-only will open that old version.

To mass update older versions you can perform an Advanced search.

Search for files where the property "Visualization Attachment" is "None".

Select them all in the results window.

In the Actions menu select Update View -> Queue Update.

This has to be done with the Job Processor.

It only generates the Visualization Attachment for the most recent Revision/Version. I've been doing the exact same trick for the past 2 months almost nightly (b/c it messes up often). Is there another way to get those older historical revisions to generate?
