Enable "Exclude button" if drawing model file is already in "Copy" action

Greetings.

Enable "Exclude button" if drawing model file is already in "Copy" action.

Currently you can "Exclude" drawings before any "Copy" action is made, but after "Copy" action is made on drawing model files, "Exclude button" is disabled and you have to begin from the start (or re-use) if you want to "Exclude" drawings. Not a big problem on single files, but really annyoing if you copy whole assembly.

I moved this post from the Idea board to the discussion forum.

The Exclude button is disabled because you have enabled the "Link Drawings with Model" option.

When that option is set, all drawings are set to Auto so they are not missed.

If you want to exclude individual drawings, you have to uncheck that setting and you can change the drawings to Exclude.

Good morning @ihayesjr.

  1. I still think this is for idea station and I will explain in below points.
  2. We want to have drawings linked to the model, otherwise drawings will not have the same filenames as their main models.
  3. I tried unchecking and it does the same, now it just have "Copy" action instead of "Auto". Maybe you also mean to disable "Automatically Copy Parents", otherwise you get this situation. In both cases, "Exclude" is disabled.
  4. If we have both options enabled (it is how we work) and "Exclude" drawings first and then use "Copy" & "Auto", it works OK, but when we have big structure, we do not check the whole structure before (too much time waste and possible errors), but we do it while we select files to copy, but then we are too late to "Exclude", because option is "Disabled".

My extra question is:

  • Why we can prepare the structure, if we "Exclude" everything first and then "Copy", but if we want to do it in the opposite order, we cannot achieve the same structure? It would be really simple and user friendly.

Greetings @ihayesjr.

I have example from one of our users. He tried to copy the whole assembly, got an errors due to 2 drawings, could not use "Exclude" and had to start over.

@ReneRepina

You can exclude before you execute the Copy Design. It does require turning off the Link Drawing to Model. Then Exclude the extra drawings then turn the Link Drawing to Model option on.

That is the current workaround but I still understand your request.

Greetings @ihayesjr.

I tried it and you are right. It works.

I have 2 comments on that:

  1. When enabling / disabling these options, it always collapses whole assembly structure to 1st level, which is annoying.
  2. Explaining this workaround to normal users would be a nightmare.

I am glad that you know what I mean. This option would be great!

CopyDesign.pngVault Copy Design, make "Exclude" Action available for Auto copied drawings

In the Copy Design, Options "Link Drawings with Model" checked.

When we copy the model (.ipt, .iam) the linked drawings (.idw) are automatically copied (Action "Auto"). This is good, the users need it all the time.

If several drawings are linked with the model, sometimes the user don’t need to copy all the drawings, only some. The issue, right click on the drawing: "Exclude" action is greyed out…

So, the users have to copy Design all the files, Take time to set the files names,…

And after go to Vault and delete the useless created drawings. Can be a big problem if the user role is only " Document Editor Level 1".

The workaround: Turning off the "Link Drawings to Model" option, then Exclude the extra drawings, then turn again the "Link Drawing to Model" option on is not verry user friendly…

Please make that the "Exclude" Action works to exclude some drawings when the Options "Link Drawings with Model" is checked.

Please check attached picture.

We come across this issue all the time in our workflow. Users do not realise that there are multiple drawings being pulled in with a single assembly until after trying to execute the copy. This creates an error (Cannot have two objects with the same name at ""), which essentially "bricks" the copy design - we cannot backtrack and exclude the drawings that are not needed, since the exclude option is greyed out.

The copy design window must be closed and the process started over. If a large assembly is being copy designed this can potentially waste a lot of time.

The workaround described above by @ihayesjr  is at least helpful, but not intuitively discoverable to me.

@bmcwilliam

Please make sure you are using Vault 2024.2 or higher update. You should no longer get that error ("Cannot have two objects with the same name at ") when multiple drawings are associated with the same model. We have added suffixes (#) to the drawings now.

Also, you do not need to close Copy Design if you run into the error; you can reset the entire design by selecting "Reuse Branch" at the very top of the file. This will allow you to reconfigure everything again.
