As an Autodesk Partner in Germany I got some problems with transferring a vault configuration from a demo or pre-configured vault to a customer vault.
My idea is a better tool to transfer a vault config from my configuration to a customer configuration.
Problem:
1. A customer don´t have data management
You have a Vault with a folder structure, lifecycles, categories and rules and want to transfer your config to the customer vault.
Export your CFG File from your vault and you must use DTU from Autodesk and export your own Vault.
With the CFG and the DTU Package you are able to clone a vault.
But you have to have the same SQL version, service pack and server OS language to do this.
2. A customer want to upgrade from vault basic
A lot of our customer are using vault basic. After some time they are getting bigger and bigger want to upgrade to workgroup or professional.
Now you have some problems with your CFG or DTU.
You must do the normal way to upgrade your Vault. After the upgrade you have a Vault workgroup or professional without categories, rules or special lifecycles. If you import a CFG files, you have get an error. If you import a DTU package, you cannot overwrite anything in the vault.
3. Different server languages
If you use German as Server OS and your customer have an English Server OS you are getting some trouble. All roles are in the server language. You cannot transfer users, lifecycle’s and properties. Because the permissions are stored in the server language. German: "Dokumentbenutzer" and in English "document user" are not the same.
4. General
That’s the reason why i need a lot of VM´s for a lot of different customers to pre configure any vault and transfer my vault to the customers vault.
If know Productstream Professional you know what i mean.
Solution:
If I have a Tool to transfer anything from one Vault to another Vault and I can decide what I want to transfer and if I want to override any Option that would be great!
I can save a lot of time, license costs for VM software and a lot of customers are happier with Vault.
Concerns:
With the DTU you can do a lot of stuff to transfer, but you cannot control what you want. Only if you edit you export XML´s.
