Working Folder Sync

Recently I have ran into the issue in my current position that our group may have something different on their local working folder that is different than what is stored in Vault.  From what I have gathered this action is intentional from AutoDesk and individuals should pick/choose what working folder files to overwrite when they download from Vault.

My question is with other document management systems I have seen a "Local Workspace Sync" that runs to ensure that users have the most current and up to date information from the vault/server.  Does Vault have something like this or do users just have to ensure they delete the working copy each time?  What if the copy is not a working copy but just downloaded for reference?

Yea you just don't get it in Vault Basic, it's definitely in Vault Pro and probably in Vault Workgroup.

It's exactly what you're saying, Workspace Sync, google it and you should see some info on it

The paid versions of Vault (not Basic) have a Workspace Sync tool.  See: http://help.autodesk.com/view/VAULT/Help/ENU/?guid=GUID-66BADCA3-5CC5-46DC-9770-38D9D8C4C511

I don't run it much.  As of Vault 2014: It does not handle large (10k files or bigger) workspaces well.  It wants to delete the Inventor .ipj file.  You have to run it from a command line and use Windows Task Scheduler to get it to run on a schedule.

Sorry should have stated, we are using Vault Pro 2015.

Kinda what I was looking for but was wanting something that was more behind the scenes that did not require user input. Ideally I would like something that looks to see if you have a file checked out or not. If you do not have it checked out then look at the last modified date and update your work space.

I'm 70% sure I've read something about the workspace sync utility having a command line based interface, but like @swalton I avoid that like the plague, it's too unreliable.

To be honest, I still bang the drum about keeping your workspace as empty as possible.  If you do not have something checked out, it should not be in the workspace.

I hear and understand all the reasons why people like leaving stuff in their workspace but for every reason is a bigger reason to not do it.  Each to their own though.

I agree 100% but unfortunately I have to deal with what it is at this point. Thank you all for the input.

There should be a solid green dot beside the files that have been edited out of turn.  To overwrite the local file with the current vault data, select the "Overwrite Local files" in the Get dialog. This should get the files back in sync with the Vault data as long as the files are not open in Inventor when you do the Get.  Other than that, I don't know of a way to have this run in the background.

A thing about the Vault Sync workspace tool.... It will not work on my system (I get an error Volume Information is denied). My workspace is D:\Designs.....Support told me that there should be another folder between my root and my workspace.  Something like D:\Vault\Designs.....I never changed it and I never use the Sync tool.

Yes I am aware of that but the issue is individuals will have to remember to do this manually.

Maybe write a IdeaStation post so the user can set the default action of the "Get" command. By default, it will not overwrite the files.
