Vault Professional Copy Design iFactories

Hello Community,

We are using Vault Professional 2020 to save our designs. We have a requirement where we need to copy design a model that has several layers of configuration factories inside it. When using the Vault Copy design and performing a full copy, all the factories get converted to stand alone models. This does not let us to swap components swiftly. Could someone share a best practice video or an article or any pointer to how we can efficiently use the Vault copy design with factories please?

The article in the Autodesk website is not very explanatory.

Hello Chris!
Thanks for the response. This is the link I referred to:

Coy Design is not compatible with iParts/iAssemblies. You can execute the copy design only on the factories/parent files, then you have to open those individually and edit their tables to set all the new child file names and parameters, then generate new children for those new tables. If you need more assistance please let us know.

Hello @Gabriel_Watson - Thanks for your response. I have a requirement where I need to copy an older version of a top level assembly and ignore the latest versions. Instead of copy designing this factory, I tried:

i) a 'GET' on it

ii) did a 'Save As' in the local workspace

iii) Checked in just the top most level (.iam) to the Vault.

When I copy design THIS new assembly, I'm not retrieving the older version but the latest version of all the components that make this assembly. Is there a workflow that I can follow to make a copy of an older version factory assembly inside Vault?

Regards,

If you need to GET a previous version of any file in Vault, select the file then go to the History tab on the bottom pane, and right-click "GET" the correct version (row). Just make sure to check out the file if you need to check it out (not in case you're just copying this), and also make sure to select the "View all versions" checkbox on the history tab so you will see every version and not just released ones.

It also helps to customize the Vault view on the History tab to include "version" as one of the columns, so you can list and read all versions by number, in order.

@Gabriel_Watson Thanks again!

I have been following your method to GET the version I need. I'm having a difficulty when I use this version and generate a new assembly (that uses older versions of parts from the Vault). After changing THIS assembly, I save only the .iam file to Vault (hoping it will still pull the older versions of the parts used in the assembly), but it pulls the latest versions of the file.

Do I have to toggle any setting to say when I want to download all files in their 'current' version and when 'as is' version from the Vault?

If you're getting multiple files under that assembly as well, you'll need to set your Get to include children files as well. Basically, highlight blue the icon circled below and make sure Dependents is checked:
