System.Runtime.Interopservices.COMException when viewing previous versions

I get a "System.Runtime.Interopservices.COMException" error when I click to view Inventor files (previous versions) in a separate window in Vault explorer.  I only get this error on some of the versions and others open fine.  The window still opens if I click "OK" so I guess no worries, but is there a way to fix this?

Hey @brent_e_barbour,

I'm sorry that you are having this issue.

I was not able to find this exact error message in our internal database, but I did find this.

Error: "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154)"

It seems that the COMException could have something to do with the wrong version of the software being registered with the OS.

What happens if you repair, all versions of Inventor and Vault you have currently installed?

I don't know.   I only recently upgraded Inventor, Vault, and the rest of the collection.  Then I installed all the updates.  I'd rather not have to redo all of that.  This doesn't appear to be a major issue because like I wrote earlier, when I click the "OK" the view window opens right up.

One possibility, the link you posted said something about installing a 32 bit vs. 64 bit Solidworks app.  I don't have Solidworks but I did install "HSMworks" before I realized it was "Autodesk HSM" I needed to install.  I then uninstalled "HSMworks" and installed "Autodesk HSM."  Also, when given the option, I always install 64 bit.  Perhaps "HSMworks" installation left something on my registry?  I don't pretend to be an IT expert so I'm not going to edit my registry unless I know what I'm looking for and what to change or delete.  Otherwise, I can live with this glitch.

You could try the suggestions here.

Autodesk Vault Preview finished with "Preview Handler Surrogate Host"

There are a number of suggestions in that link, but it doesnt sound like you want to spend too much effort in getting it fixed.

In looking into your suggestion, I right clicked on an Inventor file to open in a separate window to check the ADR version.  This time, I got an entirely new error...

Serious error.jpg

...and now the view window won't open at all.  I'm not sure if this issue is related or new all together but it wasn't doing this yesterday and I didn't change anything yet.  Actually, I can't even find ADR in my program files.  Does Vault use ADR or Inventor View to view Inventor files in a separate window?

...I found multiple copies of adp_core-6_1.dll in other locations so I copied it and placed it in the search path.  Now that error is out of the way but the original error of this discussion still resides.  Anyway, Vault uses Inventor View to view Inventor files.  My version of Inventor View is 2019.1.

...also, I don't get that Surrogate Host message, but I was trying to find my ADR version anyway since you suggested that link might provide a resolution for my problem.

Did you ever solve your issue?  I have a user with the same exact error that you posted originally.  Thought I would check before running through a bunch of things that may not even help.  TIA!

Be sure the latest Autodesk Design Review is installed.  Remove any old versions and run Vault Client installation.  Don't assume the latest version of Autodesk Design Review was installed with Vault.  If an earlier version was detected, it might have skipped right over that installation.  If Vault Client is already installed, it won't reinstall it but if Autodesk Design Review is missing, it will install the latest version that was available at the time that version of Vault Client was released or you can download the latest version of Autodesk Design Review from Autodesk.  That's what fixed my problem.
