Revert a file to an older version in Vault

Can you guys make it easier to revert a part and a drawing to an old version in the Vault? The current process is this:

1. Check out the latest version of the file
2. Rename or delete file in the working folder
3. Find the version you want, RMC and GET that file
4. Go to working folder, RMC on file go to properties, and remove the “read only flag”
5. Open the file in Inventor
6. Check in

It's pretty easy to view the old versions, but sometimes we need to roll back the history and undue the changes we have made.

I moved your post from the Ideas board to the discussion forum as I believe there is a way to do what you want easier.

1. In the History tab of the file, Right-click on the version you want and perform a Get.

2. In the main file grid on the file you want, select Check-out.

This will check out the old version of the file without getting the latest version.

Both myself and our VAR have tried this and it doesn't work. We have Vault Professional, but aren't using it for anything beyond multi-site at the moment. 

You can "Get" the proper version from History, and then when you check it out it does nothing but add the Red Circular Arrows of Doom beside the file. If you go open the local copy you get the correct version (the older one), but you also get the Red Circular Arrows of Doom (RCAD) in the vault tab of Inventor (see attached picture). At that point you can't do anything other than update from the vault with the latest version which defeats the entire purpose.

Try the reverse. 

1. Check out the file.

2. In the History tab, Get the old Version.

The status will show you the two Red arrows but you do have the file checkout.

Make a change and check it back in.

OK, got it figured out. 

1. Get part

2. Check out part.

3. Get proper version from history (overwrite the latest local copy)

4. Open proper version from history, do NOTHING else, and go check it in.

It would be nice to right click on the version in the history and say "Make latest version"....

Any plans to add an "easy button" for this process? It seems like it could all be done from the vault.

Hi @mrneibling,

We do have that command in Inventor. "Revert to Latest" like below. This will check out the historical version and makes that as current version by saving and checking in.

But with Vault 2018 we have an issue with that command. While using this command we bring the Check out dialog - which we should not. Instead we should get a prompt to Check out (like 2017). So if you are in 2018 just suppress the Check out dialog and then you will get the option to check out.

I am confused about the "Revert to Latest" command.  Can you explain it more?

If I have the latest vault version open in Inventor and click the "Revert to Latest", I get the "Check-out" dialog and then get a warning that....you are performing an operation which checks out files that may contain historical data....".   Pick "Yes" and it checks out the file and that is it.

If I have and out-of-date file open and I pick "Revert to Latest", then it just does nothing. (with the checkout dialog suppressed)

I can't quite figure out what this command does.

Also, here are some other steps which could help perform what you are looking for.

1. Open Vault Explorer
2. Navigate to the file you are trying to perform a check out on.
3. Select the file, right-click and select Get.
4. In the Get dialog, click the Checkout button on the ribbon.
5. Expand the dialog by hitting the double arrow button in the lower right corner
6. At the bottom of the dialog, click the drop-down button which shows "Working Folder".
7. Select None in the drop-down.
8. Click Ok

This will check out the old version of the file without downloading the latest version.

From your video, it looks like that the "Revert to Latest" will check out the "old" version so that it can be checked in and made the "Latest" version in Vault.

That's the "Easy" button.  It's just not labeled as such.
