Renaming content center files -- better to use Vault Rename or Content Center Editor?

I have a library of split lock washers in my content center. Their filenames are essentially descriptions. I want them to be our internal part numbers. Do I edit the table in the content center? Use the vault rename tool? Both in a specific order? What's the right way to change a bunch of "NOM SPLIT RING ##.# STL.ipt" to [company_part_number].ipt for those files?

When I use the rename wizard, I see "Old Name", "New Name", "Update Part Number" and "Numbering Scheme"

What about other iProperties? What if my new name comes from the part number? The Rename Wizard will force me to type them out one by one?

Please let me copy and paste columns at a time from another source, or reference other iProperties in the Rename Wizard.

There are FILES and there is a DATABASE. The Content Center editor will modify the table/database from where files are generated from. I'd start from there. Then, you could generate each part FILE and check them in, but to avoid duplicates rename the original ones already in Vault. Test one and see if there are no warnings.

@claudio.ibarra

Thank you for posting the idea.

You are able to copy from Excel into the Rename Wizard.

  1. In the Rename Wizard, add the Part number column.
  2. Use CTRL+A to select all.
  3. CTRL+C to copy the grid.
  4. Open Excel and paste in the columns.
  5. Use a formula to copy the Part number value into the New Name column
  6. Copy all of the changes and paste them into the Rename wizard.

I'm both happy to see it's possible in 2024, and sad that I'm still using 2023!
