New Server Migration - New Server Questions and Vault Questions

We are currently running Vault Pro 2019 on an old Windows Server 2012 R2. We are a single site with two libraries.

We are buying a new server and wish to migrate? our all our information from the old server which will eventually be sunset to the new server. Sad that even Vault 2023 does not support Windows Server 2022. Lose two years of Windows support, but I digress.

I see that you can only upgrade Vault in jumps of 2. example....Vault 2017 to 2019, or Vault 2019 to 2021. Does this still apply to our situation, we are not exactly upgrading?

If so, does that mean I would have to install Vault 2021 import all the data, test that the migration worked, then upgrade to Vault 2023?

Out of curiosity, what are your server specs and backup solutions?

Thank you.

If you are taking your data from Vault 2019 into Vault 2023, you are upgrading the databases. This upgrade path still applies.

On your new server, you can install Vault 2021, restore the backup from the Vault 2019 server, and verify that the migration has passed. Your libraries will need to be converted to a 2021 partition before moving forward to 2023. If you do not get any migration errors, you should be good to go to install Vault 2023 on top of the Vault 2021 installation. Vault 2023 will automatically uninstall Vault 2021 for you, and then you will have to migrate the databases again. Then you can perform a complete round of testing the upgrades to your data.

@john3NHRC we have had this situation on augst 2022. Please do a test first using a test invirorment as you can discover that Open Item comand from Project explorer will execute way slower than in 2019. One reasone found on  our case was the antivirus app but still after changing app things got better but still the time required cu execute the command is a bit longer then it was on 2019. We are tring to acomodate and hope future updates on 2023 version will get Vault Professional to be even greater. More if you use BOM Report command please  note that first run on a Item could take some minutes to finish. It is under investigation and again  hope future updates on 2023 version will solve this also (Case ID: 19469301).

Thank you for your help. But I have a few more questions.

It appears that I have to upgrade MS SQL 2017 Express to MS SQL Express 2019 when I make the jump from Vault 2021 to Vault 2023.

When installing Vault 2023 does it uninstall Vault 2021 & Upgrade MS SQL Express to 2019 during the install or do I have to do uninstalls / installs manually as in I have to download MS SQL Express 2019 from Microsoft and perform that upgrade myself?

You also mention: "Your libraries will need to be converted to a 2021 partition before moving forward to 2023." Is this something that is done manually / asked of me during install of Vault 2023 or is there some separate action that I have to do to perform this?

@john3NHRC for library migration you must run 2021 server first. When opening first time it will ask for migration of library from 2019 to 2021. After you are sure all is working with 2021 you can back up and start the steps for instaling 2023 version. If I remember well uninstalling must be done manually.

Edit: @john3NHRC  regarding SQL ... if you look for the system requirements for both 2021 and 2023 versions you can see that MS SQL 2017 Express (CU31) is listed. (link 2021)(link 2023)

If you have this installed you could upgrade the sql after 2023 installation!
