Moving an assembly file and it's children in Vault

I have an assembly in a folder in vault that i want to move including the part files that belong to it and (if possible) the drawing files associated with it. You see this folder has a ton of junk in it and i want to clean it up. I figured the best way to start would be to click on the assembly file, go to the "uses" tab and drag and drop the pertinant files into my new folder. Then go back and get the drawing files (no junk drawing files) and move them. But Vault wont let you do that. Is there some way to isolate these files and move them without clicking on them one at a time?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, moving files from preview pane (Uses/Where Used tabs) is not supported. You may need to select one associated file under Uses tab, click on "Go to Folder" from context menu and move it from main grid to the target folder.
The workflow you've proposed makes sense and I'll send it to our design team. Hopefully your feedback can be considered in future release.

Thanks Carol, yea it would be nice to have this one on the wish list. there have been many times i've wanted to do a simaler thing, although not exactly this, from the "uses" tab and of coures ran into the same problem. I havent tried it in 2010 and was hoping it'd been changed, oh well.

you can move multiple file from the results of a basic search window, use the "OR" operand to search multiple files (part1 or part2 or part3...)

thanks Gene, is there a way to search for files used in a certain assembly, and then drag and drop them into the file i want?

No, you can only search properties, they would all need to include an assembly specific property like a "next assy" User Defined Property. and even that is limited if you have other files like pdf's and such.

Hi @Anonymous Thanks for asking about moving files with dependents in Vault. As you already saw, this unfortunately is still under consideration with the Vault Product team. That is in this Vault Ideas thread: Move files and include dependents. I do agree with you that this could prove useful in many situations. For now, we will need to see what the product team determines about adding this to a future version of Vault. Try to have any many people vote for the idea as you can to help it gain support and strength.

This is an old thread, but still relevant today. Since there is no better way i use "Copy design" function for moving finished assembly to "clean" folder.

Select main assembly, right click, choose "Copy Design", then in copy window choose "Copy To" desired folder (Be sure to mark all parts and drawings). After copy you can delete the primary "dirty" folder.

This removes versions though, so consider that before proceeding.

Other idea with "search" would be to check out main assembly with all sub files and check them in at the same time, than try sorting by "checked in" time. You shall be able to select all of the parts that has been checked in in same batch? NB I haven't tested out this method myself.

Okay, well... I am sorely disappointed... again. It has been almost 11 YEARS now?!? Wow, I figured since they can find where used, uses, etc. that they may have this functionality implemented by now, since the main bulk of the search criteria is there... Like, that to me seems like a shoe-in to a small update, low hanging fruit, small win with big koodos... but nope. I may have to start digging in the ilogic stuff to see if there are other programmers out there that actually listen to the user base and their common frustrations... it is these small day to day things that can really make/break a product and it's reputation with users. I am commonly coming across many posts that have been initiated, but still exist 10 years or so and still no update.

Autodesk.... WHYY!!!!!!?????

Its now 13 years ago this was atopic. was doing this decade. Still is.

How can engaged community participation be expected with this sort of approach ?

I marked the structure i needed to move. Edit properties, make or use an existing property to mark the collection "to move" . Then add "to move" to filter and you have a drag and drop selection ready to get going with organising. Remember to edit and remove the "to move" after ...and go ahead to next move procedure while you wonder why these hoops are necessary 13 years after the need to move files including children surprisingly came up.

BTW: Be mindfull if using copy design to achieve this. It's not a good way to go in many cases. Any PLM connections will be faulty a best, revision and version hisotry would along with relations across common usage would suffer or have to be rearranged.

Yikes. Yet another instance of thinking "Hmmm, so how do I do this straightforward thing that many people must use and that Autodesk must have hidden somewhere...." only to find that no, they've actually not bothered to add it at all.

SolidWorks has been ahead for a long time. When you use SolidWorks, it feels like one of those robotic systems where you tell the arm what path to trace and it figures it out. When you use Inventor & Vault, it feels like you've been given levers and have to figure out the manual controls of each of the robot's actuators.

Absolutely. Autodesk could fix 90% of Inventor's reputation with a dedicated "low hanging fruit" department that focussed on small but persistent gripes that users have while doing basic things.
