Hi guys ,

My customer is planning to upgrade their server cause he is going to implement Vault and wants to streamline their datas . And he has now a dilemma between which server to go with and both Dell and HP has suggested them the below mentioned servers . Also I don't have very good server knowledge and below are the two links containing the server specifications .

Kindly help me choose the best suitable server between the two.

Dell Server Spec POWEREDGE R530

https://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-R530-Spec...

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Server

https://www.hpe.com/in/en/product-catalog/servers/proliant-servers/pip.hpe-proliant-dl380-gen9-serve...

Note :

My customer uses : Latest Solidworks and Autodesk Mfg. Collection softwares

Number of designers concurrently accessing the server on a average : 10

Do you know if the Server will be a standalone or a Hypervisor (VM)?  If I were going to purchase a Hypervisor with a VM, such as VMware I would probably go with Dell.  I have had very good luck with their servers in a VM environment.  As an added feature, Dell owns VMWare.

Stand Alone I am up in the air as in the old days Circa 90's I used HP Servers for our Unix System and they were bulletproof.  So long as the server meets the requirements of Vault plus some room to grow I would go with best deal for Price, support and service.  I am sure there are others who will offer experiences with service from both.  To date Dell Server support has not let me down, I cannot remember having any issues with HP either.

Thanks,

Hi @rtowne72

The data which they will be handling are not very complicated and not military level confidential data .

Parallely say at the max 10 CAD users and 10 Non - CAD users will be fetching data from the server. So I think a standalone server will be sufficient .

Also the customer is opting for a HP machine having - E5 dual processor and other specifications which meets Vault 2018 server requirements .

hey @Jason.Courtemanche , the suggestion which @rtowne72 has given cannot be accepted as solution over night . Let me see which server the customer finalizes and also let me observe the performance on-site . I will keep you guys updated on this situation.

Hi @Aadithya01,

Thank you for the update.

Picking a hardware vendor is a hard choice as there is a lot of options. The most important thing is to remember is picking a server that can be expanded as needed. So if the load or number of users using the server increases you don't need to upgrade to a whole new server and can just add more RAM and or another CPU. This is why more and more customers are looking into virtualizing their servers. To make it easier to add more CPU, RAM as needed.

The slowest components in any server are the read/write speeds to the hard drive. Since Vault Server uses SQL and IIS on the same server it's important to have enough RAM to keep these programs running optimally. The only time I have seen the CPU hold the server back is when there is only one CPU with one Core.

If you run into any performance issue you can capture the issue with windows performance monitor counters

Regards,

Jason
