Autodesk Data management server console 2018 could not find data

Hi!

When I tried to do a backup of our Vault client from my mobile workstation to our workstation, I ended upp getting a known error:

"Autodesk Data Management Server Console 2018 could not find the Daa Management Services on 127.0.0.1"

I checked the firewall setting for Port 80 (or at least I thought I did, it did not say Port 80 bluntly in Norwegian, but was in a long list of what seamed to be ports in the Norton software),  tried to restat the appPools in IIS, deleted the appPools folders (AutodeskDMPool ad AutodeskFSPool folders stored here: C:\inetpub\temp\appPools ), restarted he appPools in he IIS Manager, upgraded to Vault 2019 wih full migration an still he same issue.

There has not been a power outage, but we did move offices recently. The workstation in qustion is my backup computer (Dell Precision Tower 7910 - Win x64) and I manually copy both files and Vault backups when ever needed. If we get another CAD Engineer, we will ned a server set up, I know 😄

Before we moved I could restore Vault backups seamelessly. Before the move the computer was properly shut down and was without an external power suppl for about 9-16 hours.

This solution did not help me and I suspect I over complicate it or simply do not se the solution..

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for reach out on this issue on the forums. From what you describe it sounds like there's another application blocking the Vault from connecting on Port 80. Can you try opening a browser on the server and going to this URL:

http://localhost/AutodeskDM/Services/VaultHTML/

It should pop up with the Vault Splash screen. If not please copy the error over and paste it here.

I'm also a little confused by your first sentence:

'I tried to do a backup of our Vault client from my mobile workstation to our workstation'

The ADMS console can only be ran from the server to connect to the locally installed Vault Server. Can you expand on this statement about what you are trying to achieve?

Hi Trent and thank you for your reply.

Yes, I can understand the confusion and I apologize for it. The Vault and Inventor we have is operated on two separate workstation; one mobile and one stationary. The staionary is for the moment more of a backup in case my mobile is INOP og we get a new CAD engineer employed. When that happens, yes, a full server solution will be implemented. For now, I need to manually copy all files to the exact same location on the stationary workstation as on the mobile workstation. Then I perform a restore of the Vault using the backup/restore function in the ADMS Console. And that is when the error happens.

When I copied the link you provided I did get a page I see when I start up Vault.

..now what? hehe

Thank you for assisting me! 🙂

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for these additional details. That is odd that the error only occurs when attempting to restore the backup. Are you able to connect and work on the server normally?

If you can please try repairing the Vault server installation. Go to Start -> control panel -> programs and features then right click the Autodesk Vault Server 2018 and select 'uninstall/change'. This will open the server installer and select 'repair' option on the left side.

Let me know if the repair helps or if you have any other questions.

Maybe I need to do a clean install on both? Though..if my backup's don't work..curses. Good thing I may fix one, then do the other 🙂

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for trying these steps, but I am again a little confused. Do you have the server installed on both systems? Why not have one be the server then install the client to share data?

You might try doing the full uninstall and reinstall. If you get more errors I would suggest utilizing the Microsoft Fixit tool available here to do the uninstalls:

Microsoft Fixit Tool

I hope this helps let me know how it goes.

The reason to this is that I am the only one using Inventor/Vault and we have not yet set up a server. I therefore keep a backup in the cloud, external hard drive and mirror my mobile workstation to our stationary workstation. We currently have two work stations, but just one CAD-engineer. As long as we have it like this, I keep the stationary workstation operational as much as I can in case myr mobile workstation for some reason becomes inoperative.

By all means, ideally we should have a server, but as a start-up we can not invest in one until we need it, e.g. when we hire a new engineer for CAD work. That is why I do it for now.  🙂

I will perform a clean install on the stationary next week and do my best to get the starionary workstation fully up and running before doing anything with my mobile workstation. The rest of the week I am fully booked. I will inform you about the progress next week. Thank you for assisting me.

Hi @Anonymous

I think the confusion here is the use of the word 'server' for the Vault Basic you can install the server on any Workstation running Windows 7. The workstation then would be acting as a Vault server. I would recommend only installing the one Vault server to prevent confusion.

I hope the install goes OK but let me know if you keep seeing errors.

Here is the latest update:

Yesterday evening the download and install failed twice and I ran out of time. Though I got it up and running just before I went home for the day and let the install run over night.

This morning I finished off installing Inventor 2019 and then installed Vault Client and Vault server programs without any snags. Upon finishing installing Vault Basic Server it detected a database and asked for a migration, in which I chose "Run later". When I then stared the ADMS console and tried again to back-up, the same error appeared. As you may see in the attached print screen, there is a vault og about 8,61gb present in the total file store. I was not able to detach og delete the master vault. Not sure if that is a good thing, but I imagine that doing a restore will fix it all and that is why I tried. It is also a clean install and I can not mess it up..I hope.

If the file store error I get when I try and restore my Vault Basic client server is correct, I can see that from the total of 8,61gb in the file store. Can I manually delete it? Should not the restore overwrite any file store?

Just for kicks, I tried to restore from an older backup in case there was a snag with the last backup. Same error.

I get the feeling that this is really a small easy fix, but just me messing about with the wrong language or interpertation og the system...*sigh*

Hi @Anonymous,

Is there error you are getting still:

'Autodesk Data management server console 2018 could not find data management services...' ?

Can you send us the console logs from the server? By default they are stored here:

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\VaultServer\FileStore

If you can open the console then you can try restoring your data by manually attaching it - right click where it lists 'Vaults' and choose 'Attach' - although from the screenshot it appears that you already have data in your Vault. Do you need to save this data?

Hi!

I had to browse through the thread and noticed that in message 5 on Wednsday last week that I reported geting "the same error" but the image is from the initial problem before getting the error stated in the OP for this thread. Should we move the thread with a new topic?

As for the issue in the OP, I tried to replicate the initial error but did not succeed. Maybe it has been solved during the clean install?

Though I do get the same initial error that later turned in to this thread: "File store not empty". It was during the online search I came over the problem stated in the OP. It happens when I want to restore the backup I took from the mobile work station in the ADMS Console .

I did perform a backup on the stationary work station just now (where I had done a clean install of Inventor and vault 2019) and then performed a restore directly after. Both backup and restore worked flawlessly.

Attached are some of the ConsoleLog files. If nesseceary, I can upload a few more Log files.

Hi @Anonymous

I think it's OK to continue work here. If you keep getting the filestore directory is not empty error we can start a new thread.  It looks like the restore is flagging the directory here as not empty:

D:\CAD\Bioteknikk Vault\Bioteknikk

Can you try restoring to another new directory to see if that fixes the issue? I have seen this error get created on some systems where the directory is completely empty. I think this is due to anti-virus on the system. If you keep getting the error I would do the manual attach from the ADMS console to workaround the error.

I hope that helps but let me know if not and we can start a new thread.

Hi!

It seems to have worked.. Smiley Very Happy

First I set up two new locations for both the "Database" and "File Store", manually aimed the restore function to them and managed to restore from the backup file.

Then I set up a new folder, just for the "File Store" and chose manually to target the new location for the File Store restore an let the Database stand on default setting.

Last I went to the path

D:\CAD\Bioteknikk Vault\Bioteknikk

and deleted the files present, did a new restore wth both default options and it seems to have worked!

I will try and redo my original plan (copying 😧 to the staionary workstation, including the restore files - takes a few hours) and see if it works. Maybe I have to delete the files in the given path, but that is doable. If not..new thread comming up! 😄

Meanwhile...thank you for your help! 😄
