Do you mean lifecycle?  Not sure what you have for categories and what the rules are for assigning those categories, but you probably need to set up a category for the pictures and adobe files and then a rule set to assign the category automatically and then give that category the lifecycle that you want.

In Vault go to Tools->Administration->Vault Settings.  On the Behaviors tab click on Rules.  That will bring up this dialog where you can specify the requirements and the category that gets assigned to files.  File extension is one of the properties that you can use so for instance you could just set a rule that says file extension is jpg or bmp for picture files.

So it assigned the correct category to the adobe file?  Is the lifecycle assigned to that category?  Without seeing your rule set and your category settings it is hard to say what could be wrong.

Everything looks like it should be automatically assigning the office category to the ai files and so you should have access to the Engineering Release Process lifecycle.  Is it actually assigning the office category to the files or are they using Base?  If it is correctly assigning the category, is there anything in your transition criteria or security in that lifecycle that would prevent the ai files from moving to a different state?

Yes, you can use the change category command under the actions menu to manually assign it to a different category.  On any new files it should use the rule you set up to automatically assign the category.
