Opening Files in Native Applications (e.g. AutoCAD, Inventor) from Web App

Hi all,

We’re currently developing a web application that integrates with Vault, and we've received a user request to enable seamless file access: specifically, clicking a link in our web app should open the corresponding file directly in its native application — for example, AutoCAD for .dwg files or Inventor for .ipt.

We've explored a few options so far:

  • Vault’s built-in “Share File” / “Create Link” functionality — this requires a manual action in the Vault client, which doesn’t fit our use case.

  • Custom Vault URL protocols (e.g. vlt://) — this allows us to navigate to the file within Vault, which is helpful, but still stops short of actually opening the file in its associated desktop application.

Ideally, we’d like to initiate the full open operation from the web app without extra manual steps in Vault. Has anyone tackled this before, or is there any supported approach (e.g. Vault client automation, protocol extensions, etc.) to achieve this?

I can provide extra details if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!
