Tips and tricks for working remotely

Hello Autodesk community!  Do you have tips and tricks about how to survive and thrive while working remotely?  Share them here to help those who may be struggling with working from home for the first time or for much longer periods than normal (now that companies are helping slow the spread of COVID-19 by requesting or requiring employees to work from home).

What keeps you motivated, connected and feeling well?

What technologies are you using to stay productive?

Share your thoughts, both silly and serious and let's get each other through it!

New York Tri-State area. All schools, restaurants and bars are closed. Restaurants and Bars can do Takeout. So you can get a boozer-bag to go. I'm waiting to see if I'm essential or nonessential. Nonessential personnel will be sent home without pay. I could so some work at home. So if I'm nonessential. I'll try to work something out. It would download a project from OneDrive and work on my home computer.

We always used Microsoft Teams for all our project work. It has a really good addition called Shifts where people clock in and out from locations. All we do is work at home these days and have meetings on Teams. We make all our customers use Teams with us because it is free to add guests in.

Some worthwhile ideas

I know someone (with health concerns) who works at a hotel. Essential, right? People need a play to sleep, just like they need gas and groceries.

She's told her boss that these upcoming sold-out weekends are large groups of people just coming to party, and that shouldn't be allowed. If you've got 60+ people on a bus, who have rented out the entire hotel (mental free-reign?), that kinda violates the guidelines we've been given. Boss says they're not all in the same room, there's no banquet hall for them to gather in, so it doesn't count.

The clerk called the numbers on the reservation, knowing it was a party bus, informing them that all bars and restaurants will be closed, but, only one person out of the ones she spoke to cancelled, everyone else is still coming.

No hand sanitizer, clorox wipes or sink at the front desk of a hotel, and regular housekeeping supplies are getting low and hard to replenish... She called the local news to try to get someone to pressure the business owners to disallow large groups like this.

Crazy.

I'm so fortunate to be able to work from home.

Thanks to everyone who has been sharing here.  I want to recognize that it's not just simply "working from home" right now.  It's working from home in the middle of a crisis, when we are feeling worried and uncertain, where the situation is truly unprecedented.

I wish all of you health, precious health.

We don't have access to any of our servers from outside our LAN. So no thought of being able to pull a license from the server. I was very pleased how easy it was to get home use licenses based on our multi-user license.

Having Revit and Enscape capable computers at home is not an option for everyone. RDP over VPN seems like a better choice. Tell us more about this line from your article, "The best solution, other than just having a powerful machine at home or laptop at hand, is for your company to provide a dedicated server using Windows Server 2019, which provides Windows RDP with OpenGL support while Hardware Acceleration is enabled."

Here is an article that describes some options to enable you to use Vault from home.

@ihayesjr, thanks for the article.

I have set up my home office to connect to the Vault server via LogMeIn Hamachi VPN. I'm happy with how well this works for moving regular Inventor files.

My specific issues are trying to replicate my Inventor project/application/and user settings across sites. Styles/templates/user customization and things like that. I can Vault these files, but that comes with it's own set of headaches when they are modified on one site.

As far as I know Autodesk doesn't have a solution for individuals that would like a seamless experience when switching from office to home use.

@andrewdroth ,

I do understand your issue relating to these types of files. We do not have a solution for that at this time.

We are looking at ways to help with these templates, settings, and styles to help when moving from one machine to another.

We recently implemented Azure based servers, Workspot VDI & Teams phone system. All Autodesk customization is local and utilizes scripts to stay up to date when the user logs on. There were some hiccups & complaints but nobody is complaining now. The transition from work to home was relatively seamless from a technology infrastructure standpoint. Our timing on implementation was shear luck but it's worked well. I think it would be very challenging to implement in the current situation but... glad we made the call when we did.

After reading some of the other posts, I would add that performance and project structure are a non issue with Azure/workspot. There is no difference from office to home; everything is in the same place & all you need is a cheap laptop and an internet connection. A large monitor is nice. We did allow users to take desktops and monitors home. But many were already set up with workspot clients on their personal computer. Once you have that & once you're on your workspot computer it's the same system regardless of where you access it from. Same goes for Teams which in addition to using as our phones, we use for meetings and training, etc. In fact we had a guy from India (we're in U.S.) go home over Christmas and he worked from India seamlessly. We're about 350 people, using AutoCAD Map, Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks, ReCAP, BIM360, all of working from home without issue. Those of us in IT use remote desktop & VPN & teamviewer in addition to teams/workspot to support users just as we did in the office.

We are currently under mandatory stay home conditions and as I type this our Autodesk license manager is close to max usage. I got 2 home use licenses for users who didn't have internet connection.

I started working from home today.  I’ve set up my laptop to be able to work as local as possible, to cut down on VPN usage.  Everything I could load onto the laptop, I did.  But it’s nice to know that I have the option of logging into the Vault when I need to.  And with single user sign on of my Inventor and AutoCAD.... it’s all good so far.

Have you tried the Local Resources settings within the Remote Desktop Connection dialog?

@j_vandesteeg Searching online I found this 3dconnexion thread on this topic with a few suggestions posted.

Another point to keep in mind is the particular remote desktop solution you are using (Microsoft RDP or another solution) as this could affect what solutions will work for you.

Hello

We all understand that now such times are coming that we need to be more loyal to customers. help them fix problems.
Autodesk, I am turning to you

I hope you have enough conscience this time, do not blame the companies for nothing without providing evidence of the use of pirated software
I WILL LESS! because there are companies that don’t PIRATE your software, but there are technical difficulties in the form of guests with pirated software, students, during the practice, quietly brought their laptop with pirated software or a user with remote access that uses only the company’s network to connect to he has his personal PC in the office according to the RPD, but he has a personal, home-based pirated software on his PC, for which the company bears no responsibility, because the company's projects, and all work is done on the RDP, and the employee does not use his PIR software in the interests of the company

and then the company receives a notification of use, and to the question of the system administrators - please provide all the telemetry data that you received - in response - from Avtodesk you get "go f*****k" our beloved client, "we will not give you anything and we will not say" CHARGES WITHOUT EVIDENCE - OUR TABU!
and you don’t give up and you can’t understand, but where did the problem happen ..
nervous, spend HEALTH AND NERVES on your stubbornness
and tell you nothing! don't object! BECAUSE YOU ARE THE F(#)*$(&*^G MONOPOLIST!

Why am I all this - yes, because now half of the people that go home, find direction through VPN of the companies where they sell their copies of unlicensed software Avtodesk.
and Companies will be responsible for this, because the data will go through the VPN tunnel ..

Yes, they can forward the license server - but they will have to erase everything, because it was pirate - and now legal means who will answer for this? What company gave the license? * ??

+ you saw earlier who pirated from private individuals
and now these computers are legalized? who gave them the license? company "blablabla"
, oh, the blablabla company, you are now responsible for the home-based software for the home user, we are dumping all the responsibility on you!

and more
If an employee connects through the RDP from home to his working desktop PC (where are the floating network PAID PURCHASED LEGAL licenses!
Is this also a violation of the license agreement? (

Colleagues, people, be careful with Autodesk products - do not substitute pirated software for your company

Due to the fact that the provision of information turned out to be “such a state secret, they will understand us now, they will understand how we monitor copies of our software, no, no .. we won’t give them anything, let them shake and sit with fear” such phobias, misunderstandings arise, and how to be further What to license, how to legalize the workplaces of employees at home and then not be responsible for it.

Not sure who to reply to in this thread but...if having issues working in CAD of any kind over a VPN, consider copying support and design files over and running a .BAT file to trick your computer into thinking you have your network drives without being online.  This method requires quite a bit of personal responsibility and over communication with coworkers, but moves so much faster than over a VPN and you don't get the LOGMEIN lag.  Just a thought, if you have questions on process feel free to contact me, general screen shots are attached to this post.  Otherwise happy hunting and good luck to all out there!  I love the ideas and community that is here in the forum!
