Is email stating that my Community username needs to be changed legit?

Hello;

Just received an email from Autodesk Community <autodesk@autodeskcommunications.com> stating that my username needs to be changed due to a system update. Is this legitimate?

If so, how does this impact my username that I use to login to my Autodesk account for licensing/downloads etc?

Same. I had a user just receive this today. Can we confirm if it's legit or not?

Wondering the same thing.

Change it to what, exactly? Change it to something different?

When I click the link it takes me to the autodesk page but there are no steps to follow as it instructs in the email.

"Hello [name],

We're reaching out because your Autodesk Community username needs to be changed due to a system update.

To maintain access to your Autodesk Community, log into your account at profile.autodesk.com and follow the steps to change your username by Friday 12 May.

Thanks,
The Autodesk Community Team"

It's either a phishing attempt or It's referring to your screen name. Best not to click links especially if you are in doubt.

Same question coming up in other forums.  Looks legit but I'm leery.

If anything, I want to know why it has to be done.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with questions about this email.

An update requires it, from the wording. You can always change it back. If you're unsure, just navigate to your profile without clicking on the link.

I just got the same mail. I think since there is no info in the "Announcement" https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/community-announcements/bd-p/977 it looks strange to me ...

If it IS legit- then someone needs to learn how to communicate better. A specific reason for needing to change would be the correct way of notifying people.

And as I mentioned in the other thread, I received TWO within 2 minutes of each other. That in itself got my hackles up a bit.

Exactly - they provided no reason.

Well, I'll just wait and see if my account gets deleted.

I'm retiring in early 2024 - I really don't care 😁

@michellem @DarrenP @Djacob62 @rgorman @Peter2_1 et al,

Outside of the IT folks that triggered the surprise email, no one else at Autodesk seems to know. Sit tight and wait like the rest of us sadly.

Hopefully it does NOT mean we all lose access to our software and licenses starting at midnight on May 13th... .

Came here to try to find out the same thing. I have a feeling this is a phishing attack. For what it's worth, I also found some results for "autodesk@autodeskcommunications.com" being used for some bizarre Harry Potter message that some folks got a few years ago which furthers my suspicion that this is not legitimate. Same issue where.  I'm wondering if an update is forcing everyone to have a unique username.  Several of us have usernames that are not unique.  Mine included.  This would be frustrating.  I've been a member since 2006 while this other user with the same name joined in 2014.  If this is it, why do I have to change?

I got the same email. My username has been changed to my email but I don't want to have the email public.  When I tried to change it back, it said my user name was already taken.  By who?

You can actually do a username search.  I put in 'dbroad' and it came up with five hits.

Folks

Thanks for telling us about this.

Sadly this message is a legitimate one but poorly worded and confusing. It is specifically around access to the community and an effort to address multiple accounts with duplicate usernames. Execution of what should have been a routine process to make corrections have left much to be desired. The team is working on more information right now and the best way to get clear information out to everybody.

Let me reassure you that nobody is losing access. You will get more information out there as quickly as possible. In the meanwhile, I'd very much appreciate all your help in reassuring other customers that you see asking questions elsewhere or pointing us to them.

More soon,

Mark.

The sad part of this is that the active users with duplicated names are the ones most likely to change. Some of them have had their SN for decades. The ones that aren't very active probably won't really care and may even choose not to take any action. Even if everyone changes, that will leave the username open for the next person that tries to use it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a forum that allowed duplicate user names. I feel for you all being forced to change your names. I might go for something like "The user formally known as [your old name here]", a la Prince.
