How do you manage heavy DWG files without AutoCAD slowing down?

Hi everyone, I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been working on a few large DWG files recently, and my AutoCAD starts lagging and responding very slowly — especially while panning, zooming and switching layers.
I’ve already tried Purge, Audit, and removing unused blocks, but the improvement is still very minor. The file size goes above 80-120 MB sometimes, which makes it difficult to work smoothly and causes delays in my workflow.
So I have a few questions for experienced users:
What are the best practices for handling heavy DWG files?
Do you prefer Xrefs for large projects, or do you keep everything in a single file?
Any specific layer management or cleaning method that actually helps performance
Does using external plugins or optimization tools make a noticeable difference?
I want to keep my project files organized and lightweight, without losing data or drawing quality. If you have a step-by-step method, I’d really love to learn it.
Thanks in advance! Any tips, workflows, or tool recommendations are welcome.
Looking forward to your suggestions.
