Experiences Using an i5 Gaming Laptop for Autodesk SketchB ook: Performance with Large Projects

Hello Autodesk Community,

I've recently acquired an i5 gaming laptop and am looking to use it primarily for digital art, specifically with Autodesk SketchBook. I understand that gaming laptops generally come with decent specifications, but I'm curious about how well an i5 gaming laptop can handle SketchBook, particularly when working on large, complex projects.

Here are the detailed specs of my laptop:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-10300H (4 Cores, 8 Threads, 2.50 GHz base, up to 4.50 GHz Turbo Boost)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with 4GB GDDR6 VRAM
  • Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD
  • Display: 15.6" Full HD (1920x1080) IPS, 144Hz

Key Points of Discussion:

  1. General Performance:
    • How does Autodesk SketchBook perform on an i5 gaming laptop?
    • Are there noticeable differences in performance compared to i7 or i9 laptops?
  2. Handling Large Projects:
    • What is your experience with handling large projects, such as high-resolution canvases with multiple layers?
    • Does the laptop manage to keep up with the demands, or are there significant slowdowns?
  3. Multitasking Capabilities:
    • How well does the i5 gaming laptop handle multitasking with Sketch Book? For example, running other applications like Photoshop or Illustrator simultaneously.
    • Any tips on managing system resources effectively to ensure smooth performance?
  4. Rendering and Exporting:
    • How efficient is the i5 processor in rendering and exporting large files from SketchBook?
    • Are there any tricks to optimize these processes on an i5 gaming laptop?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences. Your insights will be incredibly valuable not only for me but also for other artists considering similar setups.

Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Hi Luciaon,

Welcome to the Autodesk Civil 3D community! While this is primarily a Civil 3D forum, I understand you want to use Autodesk SketchBook on your i5 gaming laptop.

Here are some resources to help you determine if your i5 gaming laptop will be suitable for Sketchbook:

  • Autodesk Sketchbook System Requirements: This official Autodesk page outlines the recommended system specifications for running Sketchbook effectively
  • Diagnosing Performance Issues: If you experience slowdowns after reviewing the system requirements, you can use Jeremy Main's GPU Profiler to pinpoint bottlenecks related to CPU, RAM, GPU, or bandwidth limitations.
  • CPU Benchmarking: This CPU benchmark website allows you to compare the performance of your i5 processor against other CPUs used for creative applications like SketchBook
