Spaces in Autodesk Tandem, the Not-So-Obvious Things You Should Know

As we all know, Autodesk Tandem is great when it comes to visualizing a facility; that includes Spaces.  Space in Tandem can be seen and understood in ways that are not possible or easily accessible on other platforms.

To start off, what is a Space in Tandem, and how is it created? A Space in Tandem is a room that has assets assigned to it. Spaces are created and defined in the model and brought into Tandem when models are imported. At the time of this forum posting, Spaces cannot be defined or created in Tandem.

Now for what you can do with Spaces from a facility in Tandem!

In the Spaces panel, users can search the list of Spaces and toggle the list by Name, Number, and Level; making a long list easier to digest when there are hundreds of rooms in the model.

When a Space or Spaces have been selected, the properties panel will open on the right displaying information about the current selection*. If the name of the Space needs to be changed or updated due to construction or renovations, double-click the Name field in the Properties panel to do so.

In addition to the Name field, any common property can be updated or changed. The only properties that cannot be changed are the Design properties. This is intentional; users cannot make changes to Revit properties. Users are currently testing this workflow in our Revit Plugin Beta.

*When multiple Rooms are selected, and properties are not identical between the entire selection, properties will populate *varies* in the Properties panel. The above workflows still apply when in this state.

Now, viewing Spaces in Tandem is where it gets really interesting. When selected, the Spaces are highlighted like so, in the viewer, and all information about the room is displayed in the Properties panel, including associated Connections and Streams under Relationships.

An additional workflow worth highlighting is coloring coding the Spaces in the viewer. In the properties, select the Rooms filter under Revit categories and then turn on the Color Filtering for Spaces.

Users can then select one or multiple Rooms in the Filter panel and even change the filter color for the room if desired.
