Inventor -> 3ds Max -> Stingray: Materials get lost

Hello everyone,

 

Stingray can't import materials from Inventor? 

 

1. I created a simple block of gold in Inventor:

2. Using the suite work flow "3ds Max as Solids" (inside Inventor) to import the file into a new 3ds Max scene:

3. Send to Stingray (DCC Link):

Does anyone know what happend to my gold material? It was not imported and the block has now the default material.

 

Importing assembly with multiple parts and materials is even worse, because in stingray everything is white. 

And using new materials in stingray also does not work since the assembly has only one material channel!

Hello Sebastian,

 

a simple block of gold sounds interesting 🙂

 

Here´s what I did.

 

 

I decided for multi Body object modelling with all custom

appearances- here´s the catch - exported as IGS. No textu-

res, therefore you can handle them in Max and Stingray.

 

Apart of the advantages when modelling all parametric,

each body can be handled individually eg. for simple

animations.

 

Given you use this method you can drag and drop MAX

FBX files to Stingray, set the coordinates to zero and fly-

through your plant in a bout 2 to 6 hours, depending on

conversion Speed and assembly structure.

Light set up will take some time.

Try clicking "Update Materials" and "Textures" upon importing.

My guess this will fix.

@Logos_Atum I just saved the block as igs, imported it in 3ds max and sent it to stingray. It worked, the gold is gold again, thanks!

 

The material in 3ds max is now a "Standard" material with a simple base color, not an "Autodesk - Generic" material, but this should be ok for the beginning.

 

@paulkind I checked "Update Materials" and "Textures" upon importing, but it does not work. But I think I figured something out:

It seems like Stingray is not importing "Autodesk - Generic" materials. It works if I create and assign a new material in 3ds max (for example a DirectX Stingray Shader.

 

But shouldn't Stingray be able to import Autodesk materials? I saw a demo once and they send an Inventor Assembly to 3ds Max and then to Stingray, it worked flawlessly without paying attention to the materials.

Ok I found the answer: Generic Materials are not supported Smiley Sad

 

David.Menard:

Protein and Generic materials are unfortunetly not exported into the FBX and you will end up with default grey materials in Stingray. There is also a known bug in Max where if a Generic materials is part of a multi-material on an object, it might appear to work in Stingray, giving the impression that some materials might be working, but they are not supposed to be supported.

In 3ds Max, you can convert every "Autodesk Generic Material" in a "Standard Material" with Rendering -> Scene Converter!

 

Just make an empty rule set and add the rule "Generic Material to Standard" and hit convert:

This way you can get some Material into Stingray.

 

Does anyone know how automatically convert Generic Materials in Stingray/DirectX Materials?

You can link your inventor files direct to Max, then use v-ray materials - then level Sendak to stingray.
The materials come through fine,with little adjustment needed.
3dsmax prep is the key to manage the data prior to connecting to stingray
