Separate structure

Separate structure

I have a question that I feel will have a straight-forward answer, but am relatively new to using the software and cannot figure it out.

I am modelling a structure which consists of a tubular steel column, and I would like to attach steel channels to the front and back faces of the column to mount equipment. The issue I am having revolves around attaching these beams to the column. I cannot them both through the center/axis of the beam, or I get an overlapping member error. If I attempt to offset them, I have a separate structure warning.

What is the correct way to attach the beams to the column?

Attached is the only solution I can find that will solve the "separate structure error." The beam goes through the center of the column.

However, I need to attach another beam to the opposite face. As I mentioned above, if both beams go through the center of the column, there is an overlapping member error. But if I offset them, they are seen as a separate structure.

Thank you for your assistance. Like I said, I am sure there must be an easy fix - I just can't find it!
