procedure for calculating foundations and unions

Hello everyone

I am doing the calculation of the foundation and unions of a metal structure but...

I have doubts when I calculate the union between the metal column and the foundation footer, but in addition I have to calculate the reinforcement of the foundation footer. When I define the union, I have to put the size of foundation footer but when I calculate the reinforcement I heve to put the size too, and they can be differents!!! This is not logical!!

How I have to do it? In what order?

Thanks!!!!

I'm not sure if  understand you correctly. Could you make some sketches that illustrate what you mean?

I am going to try explain the question...

In a metal structure, we have to calculate the concrete foundation with reinforcements and we have to calculate the metalic link between metal column and concrete foundation.

When I am going to define both elements, in both  we have to specify the length , width and height of the foundation

In the following images we can see this kind:

  • Definition of foundation with reinforcement

  • Definition of metal link

My question is: What we have to calculate first? , the foundation with reinforcement or the metal link with the foundation?

Because when we define one of them,  the other dependent on the first because in both we have to specify length, width and height of the foundation

Thanks!!!

I'm not sure if I understand the situation correctly. My assumption is that knowing values of reactions in a you are able to determine the size of the foundation. Then you can use its dimensions for design of anchor bolts for fixed or pinned steel column base connection.

Let me ask you this question: how would you design them by hand as my understanding is that the sequence of actions should be the same as when you use the program?
