Node rotation

Hello,

I am creating a model for a timber framed dome (see below) which consists of vertical lengths of plywood which are notched and overlapped with horizontal members. To create the dome shape, I have discretized some arcs, then had to manipulate them quite crudely to get them to intersect.

Assuming there will be no rotational stiffness at the intersection, how can I ensure that the intersection is pinned?

Additionally, where I have discretized lengths of panel, I have noticed that the sections seem rotate between nodes, which suggests to me that perhaps they are already pinned? If that is the case, can I fix the discretized nodes within a panel length?

I have attached my .rtd file for reference. Any further comments on how to improve would also be welcome!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @Anonymous,

You can use Compatible Nodes to ensure a pinned connection is achieve at the intersections, see link below;

Hi @Anonymous

Could you attach some pictures showing what you described as I'm not sure if I understand correctly what you want to achieve?

Try to zip the Robot file as it wasn't attached.

I tried using compatible nodes at the intersections and it cause instability type one errors.

Im trying to ensure that the nodes between members are pinned at intersections:

Ive attached as a zip this time. Thank you both!

Have you tried rotation releases in bar secundary elements only?

Hi @Anonymous

Using the compatible nodes to connect arbitrary located bars for their continuity in the 3D space can be tricky die to the required rotation of the compatibility to make sure the right d.o.fs are blocked and released. I'd suggest defining the elements in their exact locations and connection them with short bar elements with appropriate releases defined at one ends instead unless you actually don't need this and as suggested by @rsousa_ releases for the secondary elements are good enough.
