Column reduced length

Hi everyone!

 

I'm trying to learn this new software and I have a problem concerning the offset function.

 

I would like that a column reaches the beam bottom flange and not the axis, I tried to use the offset function so I definied an offset with reduced length at the beginning/end of the member lenght (see attached picture), but it works fine with the beam, not for the column.

 

Anyone can tell me where I'm wrong?

Select the offset , select or type the bar on the box and click apply. Sometimes clicking the bar with the offset cursor doesn´t work.

 

If this still doesn´t work for you , can you send the model?

What you suggest is exactly what I do, but unfortunately it doesn't work with me.

 

This is the procedure that I follow:

 

1) I open the offset function and my offset list is empty;

2) I click on "new" offset, it opens a window with "absolute" sheet, in "values" every U is set to 0, "Coordinates system" is set to "Local" and "Relative offset" is empty.

3) I click on "Relative" sheet, then both "Section position" and "Axis position" are set to the centre;

4) I put "Reduce length" in both "Beginning" and "End" in the "Member length" box, then I click on "Add" and the offset created appears in the offset list;

5) I click on the "current selection" field then I select the column on the screen and its number appears in the "current section" box;

6) I click "Apply" and...nothing happens 😞     (see first picture attached)

 

I don't know why this procedure works for the beams, not for the column, but if I double click on the offset created, I see that in "Absolute" sheet the "Relative offset" box is no more empty, there is Reduce length in both Beginning and End but only in X direction!!!....This should be correct because the local axis X should be the column axis    (see second picture attached)

 

Any ideas??

Hi @cupellaro

 

As your beam has got the offset to the top flange it is harder to see the offset applied to the column. As the detection of the distance to reduce/increase bar length is based on the detection of the adjoining elements in its either node you need to divide the beam into two elements first. Then you should define the offset as on the attached picture. To be honest I can't tell why it is the beginning rather than the end which works. I hope this helps.

It's a pity that the offset applied to the column is not able to recognize the offset applied to the beam (other software do this) and...yes, also the reason why the beginning works rather than the end.

Hi @cupellaro

 

Personally I'd be very careful with using offsets for beams. On the other hand you can define any offset using just the values rather than the one that detects the size of adjoining element when you have additional attributes (such as offsets) assigned to it.
