Best practice for modelling slab edge.

Hi,

I am modelling and designing a flat slab on a regular grid of  square columns.

In reality the slab edge is in line with the outer face of the exterior columns.

I have currently modelled the slab from column node to column node, which is effectively column centreline to column centreline and not what the finished building will be like.

Is it best practice to always draw a slab edge to column nodes are should I offset the slab so that is on the outer face of the column?

Hope you can advise

Thanks

Richard.

Please mind that you create calculation model instead of the true model of building

Hi,

The previous post made by Romanich is the absolute true.

Keep in mind that with your model you loose a little bit of self weight and a little bit of loads, due to the reduction of the effective area of the roof.

Well, you have three ways:

1) add a beam between the columns centerline that have the same thickness of the slab;

2) add linear loads to you model to simulate the presence of the missing slab;

3) offset your slab to the effective contour.

Everything depend by the colums size. If they are 30x30 cm this issue is trascurable, if they are 100x100 cm the problem is different.
