ASCE 7-16 / Equivalent Lateral Force Method / Effective Seismic Weight Issue

Greetings

I noticed an issue with the Effective Seismic Weight in my structural model.

One can see in the simplified calculation note, that the dynamic weight should be around 200000kN while the structure self-weight should be around 100000kN. Later in the notes, where the seismic loadcase report is present, an effective seismic weight of around 100000kN has been adopted and which is then multiplied by "Cs" in order to obtain the base shear force. Also, in the vertical distribution of seismic forces part, one more intriguing thing can be noticed. The seismic story forces when summed are in accordance with with the calculated base shear (W=100000kN), but the sum of story weights which are next to them are equal to the other correct total dynamic weight (W=200000kN).

Below, I have underlined in red the values that I think should be correct, and in blue the values that are incorrect.

In my hand calculations, the effective seismic weight is approx. 200000kN.

Also, I provided the reaction forces and story forces per loadcase which are used to define the effective seismic weight.

Similar mass and weight issues appear in the modal analysis and in the automated equivalent lateral force method approach in the software.

One more thing I would like to point out is that I tried removing the live loads from the effective seismic weight calculation by changing the participation factors to 0, and as a result the new effective seismic weight value did not change and it appears to be approx. equal to the self-weight total vertical reaction.

Please, try to help me resolve this issue. Do let me know if any additional information is required.

Hi @a.bubalo

Changing uniform loads from cases 2 to 5 to not projected should help. Projected UZ loads are not converted to horizontal dynamic masses

Hi @Krzysztof_Wasik
Unchecking the projected loads option of the surface loads resolved the issue.
Thank you.
