Any Robot users from Australia

Hi,

We are currently looking at a design package for primarily concrete structures. That can do windload, earthquake analysis etc.

As we use revit for documentation obviously Robot comes to mind.

 

We are located in Australia and was wondering if there are any users here in the forum from Australia that uses Robot with any feedback or comments.

We have tried other concrete package that just doesn’t seem to work well for us.

 

Also, as I understand Robot currently can’t do Post Tensioned design but was wondering if this is something that are considered to be added?

If you are working with Revit, surely Robot will have better interoperability. Hope this would help:

Hey Johk02

 

From my experience (been using robot for about 4-5 years, Australian based) Robot is a great structural package that covers most aspects of structural analyses (Linear, Non-linear, Harmonic, etc). Equally important, I feel like its quite user friendly.  

 

We do also use Revit for documentation, and the interchangeability of Robot-Revit does come in handy. Although, sometimes (sometimes a lot of times) the interchangeability of Robot-Revit doesn't quite work as smooth as you would like it to.

 

if you primarily looking for a concrete package, you should be aware that robot although can do the analysis of your concrete structures is yet to include AS3600 code checks to it. You would still need to do these code compliances in your design separately.

I am going to use Robot for steel design (never used before), and happy to see your comments about the great ability of Robot. However, I have a question about the wind simulation of Robot. Since I have no experience about Robot so I am curious the wind simulation can whether obtain the consistent wind action force as per AS1170 part 2?

Hi gutianhong,

 

The wind simulation in Robot is simply a virtual "wind tunnel" that relies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to calculate the wind pressures. Unfortunately, this does not comply wih AS1170.2 and from my experience it generally gives you a slightly lower wind pressure values than those obtained from the code. 

 

However, the wind simulation is very handy and time saving when it comes to the Concept Design stage in any project (which is usually where I use this tool). You can quickly get all your wind pressure values for all wind directions on your structure (I usually add a 1.25 load coefficient to increase the wind loads) and can then analyse your concept model to check that it's a workable concept.

Eduardo, so what code do you use in your robot analysis? And what sort of errors do you get with the interoperability between revit and robot?

@eear_gabriel , sorry for the late reply. 

 

For Australian designs we use all relevant Australian "AS" standards, i.e AS4100, AS4600 etc. However, for concrete design, we use our own internal software that is link to robot. 

 

Regarding the Robot-Revit interface, the main issue we get is getting the "Analitical" model in revit correctly set up so it gets translated to Robot correctly. Otherwise you get the typical geometry imperfection errors such as members not connecting properly and gaps between structure.
