Worksharing across different versions of Revit

The architect we are working with is creating a Revit central model in an older version of Revit than us. Can we work with our newest version of Revit (2015) and still synchronize with thier central model? Should they link an IFC dump from us, rather than have us try to synchronize with thier central model? I need some solid solutions please.

Revit isn't backwards compatible so syncing to their central file is not going to work

they would have to export to an ifc file or sat and send that file to you
