The “Edit Type” option for an element tis greyed out

I am trying to select all bolts in the structural model I received.

i can select one, but 'Select similar' is greyed out, and every single element has no type or family information available, see below.

What can be a reason for this behavior?

You cannot do this as it is an IFC model, look at the other Parameters in the Properties Palette.

Did you use Open IFC?

If you Save this model back as a Revit model it will allow editing but may be limited in some areas.

For full functionality you need the original Revit File.

That's not the case, it is saved as .RVT

But, maybe it was saved from exported IFC and lost the information during this process...

Possibly, you would need to really find this out as you cannot really work with that level of limited functionality.  It may have come from another modelling package or a Structural Application?

Revit connections are typically part of an automated process and an assembly so need to be edited through the Revit Connection Container.  As you can see form the Properties Palette the information is much different to that of your image.

that would be my first guess... it's not "real" Revit content. it was something imported or translated into Revit. I see this all the time with manufacturer families that are made from imported content from other formats instead of made from Revit Content.

That would make sense. most likely it was exported in that way. Thank you for all your help!
