Hi,
I graduated as structural engineer as well and am working now as BIM manager. I had the chance to find a company that hired me without knowing too much about it, neither the BIM process, nor the Softwares ( in my case Revit).
I have been lwearning the last few month and am still struggling...
i have some background in programming which comes handy because you have to deal with a lot of file formats and this makes you understand it a little better.
my best advice i can give you:
- get yourself a strudent Revit version (should be free) **** long as you can/ or ask a friend who is still studying
- make a lynda.com subscription ( you can try them out for ten days with one email) and have a look at all the tutorials by paul f aubin, i like those the most. he kind of explains the philosphy behind it.
- try to find a company where you can start maybe as a modeler
- learn python ( https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-python) still on my list aswell
- learn dynamo --> revit is limited sometimes or some tasks are really repetitive which can you accelerate with coding. But get to know revit first before you try to do stuff with dynamo/coding
- learn about IFC ( if you are in Europe)
- try to model a real object you know well and try to get decent sheets out of it and all the quantity takeoff.
- subscribe to all kind of newsletter concerning BIM and structural analysis software and read them, just to keep track what is out there and what is allready possible
if you got more specific questions feel free to contact me
good luck, and have fun( it will not always be... there is so much to learn)
