Revit on cloud file server

Hi,

My company is opening a small regional office and I was asked whether it was feasible to use cloud storage instead of an on-premise file server. Since the most critical things we will be doing are with Revit, I thought I'd ask the question here. I'm not talking about collaboration. I'm talking about straight replacement of a file server with a cloud-based file storage system.

Thanks

I would suggest you investigate Collaboration for Revit. It is a cloud service for worksharing. You will not be able to use a cloud service for typical worksharing. The performance would most likely not be acceptable and depending on the service could lead to corruption issues.

Good luck.

When using a cloud file service, like Dropbox or Google Drive, the central model that one user syncs to isn't the same central file that another user syncs to. Rather, they sync to central files on their local machines, which are then synced to the cloud, which are then synced to other user machine. Because of this, Revit isn't able to properly verify if a user has ownership of an element or not and users are able to work on the same elements simultaneously. I tried setting up a central model like this once with a client, and it was a total fiasco.
