Repeating CMU detail item

I'm aware that the CMU repeating detail item is a system family and I can not edit it. My desire to do this is so that I can add the 3/8" mortar joint. I was able to edit the detail item for the CMU family and I also created a parameter to turn the mortar joint on and off per instance. I would like to add this same parameter to the repeating detail item but can not find where on my network the repeating detail items is located. Is this something I can do?

You can create or edit an existing repeating detail component and change the detail component type to a different one.  But you cannot turn off something of the detail component for a specific module within the repeating detail.  For example, you cannot turn off the mortar joint for only the end piece of the repeating detail.  

I would create the repeating CMU detail normally with all the joints, and append separate CMU detail component without the joint to the end.  Or add a masking region to mask the end joint.

Or create a line based detail family using array and append a separate end piece the same way.
