You have to get familiar with Revit Family Editor. In there you can modify or make new families.
You can open a column family from the library, see how it works, modify it.
If you go to the knowledge autodesk website HERE, you can find documents relating to creating families.
Of course you could also buy books or follow video tutorials
Also on sites like Youtube you will find many videos with explanations how to create (column) families.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
When creating families you normally have to constrain the elements (e.g. extrusions) and add parameters to them.
What you have to constrain and add parameters all depends on what you want to try to accomplish.
Above a screenhshot of a structural column family. In an elevation view I constrain (lock) the extrusion to the loverr and upper ref level.
Then in the project I can placve them in the proper location and levels.
But take your time to get familiar with the family editor. It will take time to get to know it and understand how everything works together.
Read up how it all works (see link in previous post).
