Rebar End Coupler - Visibility in elevation

Hi,

We have created stairs in Revit and added rebars. We've add couplers to the ends of the bars.

We have made sure that couplers are visible in the visibility graphics and visibility states. The graphics do indicate that you can't see the couplers in cut.

You can see the couplers in plan, and the elevation that follows the bars but not end on. This is the view we would like to show.

Is it unusual to expect to see them for details? We have ended up adding 2D objects to show where the couplers are.

Are we doing something wrong or is it by design? I've tried to edit the coupler family but you can't add symbolic lines  the family.

I've attached an extract model and a few images.

The model is in 2020.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Keiron

Hi @keiron.russell

Currently couplers are displayed in views at an angle less than 75 degrees to the bar axis.

What would you expect to be displayed in such a view, the symbolic geometry or the solid geometry? Or both?

Hi O

I would be happy if there was a symbolic symbol, but why not both?

I am really talking about 90 degrees so the end on view elevation.

If you see my attachments you only see the bars and the couplers are missing.

It's so that you can detail the view. The ends on this job are hexagonal, but we had to 2D them.

Thanks

Indeed your's is the particular case of looking head on at the coupler.

Currently the solid geometry is also hidden at this angle.

When you are talking about a symbolic representation, in this case, do you mean a shape in an elevation of the coupler family (round or hexagonal)? I guess, the rectangular one wouldn't really make sense at this angle.

Also, would you imagine there should be a value of the angle that would mean displaying one or the other (like this 75 degrees) ?

One last question - do you often show the arrangement of couplers like this in your projects? In plan views also?

In terms of viewing in the face-on elevation I would expect to see the round/hexagonal part.

Arrangement of couplers in is not something we have previously done. However I have not previously modelled then in. In this case we were detailing for the stair reinforcement and had to set out the eazistrip anchor system so it was required.  I would assume any future projects in which we have to detail similar elements then the detailing would be done in a similar manner.

Thanks

I can recommend the following workaround for highlighting the bars that have couplers fitted.

I’m using filters to highlight the bars with a certain rebar type (e.g. 16M and 25M) and an end treatment at start of a certain value.

In my example, I’ve duplicated the Threaded ET, renamed it as Coupler + Threaded and added it as ET 1 in the coupler type properties.

This means that the first selected bar has the ET1 applied and would be considered to have that coupler fitted.

The color and size of the dot is controlled by the projection (e.g. in a plan view that is not cutting the bar) or cut line width (when the bar is cut by the view)

Check out the attached video and sample project

Hi Ovidiu,

Your solution appears to be showing in plan. Does it work in the elevation view. We didn't really have a problem with the plan view.

 Thanks

It should work in any view, because it relies on filters.

You can also save the view template and apply it to other views, so you don't have to reconfigure the colors.

Please note that if the view is showing the cut bar (dot), but also other parts of the bar, you may want to add color and properties to the cut lines, otherwise the bar segments will be shown in the same color.
