Hi, I seem to remember that Revit can make corrugated metal decking. However I forgot how to put it in, make it visible, and otherwise control it. Does anyone have some pointers? Is it possible (by any miracle) for someone using Revit to make the corrugated metal decking so that it will be installed the same way in the field? Thanks!

A corrugated metal sheet is structurally something between a beam and a slab. I haven't found any good solutions that would make sheet modelling a smooth experience. Depending on what you're going produce there's a couple of workarounds.

 

1. Make an extrusion. Draw appropriate cross-section. You must draw both faces. Extrude. Making openings or cutting ends in different angles is a teadious task.

 

2. Take a beam family and change the cross-section into a corrugated one. Use array or beam system to place the sheets. Keep fingers crossed when you do openings or end cutting.

 

An exact modelling of sheets must take into account overlapping at both ends and sides. But for ordinary purposes I'd like to have an sheet extension that works like the roof/ floor tool; draw the edges for sheet area, mark main direction, select cross-section and go. Then I can make face-based or vertical openings.

 

With the roof tool you're able to modify the lower edge with the rafter cut option. The sun will start shining again when that feature will cover also the sides and upper edge.

wow thats a good idea. but what about just the structural floor itself? If you look at the picture in revit of Floor: Structural, you see a very distinct corrugated metal deck representation. But how do you get that look? No mater what I do my floor is always flat on both sides. What gives? Why would they tease us like that?

Go to architectural>Floor and pull down Floor: Structural. Here you can make a floor or a roof type and under structure, you can edit to add structural metal deck. Once you've sketched the boundary and applied it, the corrugation will show up correctly in sections.

We've run into this problem in the past, but to see the actual ribbed profile of the deck you simply have to revise a few options in the deck itself to make it show up. Load the profile of the deck you wish to use. Edit the Type and select Edit under the Structure tab. In the Edit Assembly window, change the function to Structural Deck [1]. More options will become available like Structural Deck Properties which will allow you to assign your deck profile and deck usage. Set the deck usage to Standalone Deck. I believe your deck should show properly now in live sections. One thing to check is that you are a Fine detail level i your live cuts.

Hmm...not sure why that didn't work for you as it worked fine for us. A couple of things to check, I assume you are inserting a structural floor, not an Architectural roof deck or something like that. Did you define a span direction when you modeled the deck? For what it's worth I've attached a few screen shots of the buttons I noted in my previous reply. Not sure if this helps you, but I hope it does.

Yeah, I found all those buttons, but it just didnt show up in 3D can you show a screen shot of what your metal decking looks like in a 3D view please?

Ah, now I understand what you are looking for. No, my metal deck in the 3D view does not show the ribs. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a way to show this in the 3D view. The steps I walked you through were for live section cuts and detail cuts... the deck ribs should should when appropriate in the live cuts.

I did exactly what you did and tried to see it on a section but it didnt show... is there some family i should have loaded beforehand? If so, which ones?

Be sure your section is perpendicular to the span direction. Your view level of detail should be Medium or High as well.

Yes, you have to load a decking profile beforehand.  There is such a profile provided in the "out of the box" revit families, I use "M_Form Deck_Non-Composite".  See the attached file for the location of the files.
