Linked models dwg sat for infrastructure

Hi,
Using Revit for structures in infra it is inevitable to use models form e.g Inventor or DWG AutoCAD.
to be able to link and use these extern models thay have to be inserted in a family AND should be using the 'shared coordinats' method.
I cannot do this in a logical way. Shared coordinats does not seem to work or is not available in family editor.
the only way to do this is to insert the dwg the model first with shared coordinats. Make a in in place family next.
Then, in family editor, link the DWG for the second time. Using center to center.
Now if have to align and level the inserted model to the inserted model. The family can be closed and last the inserted model can be erased.

This a seem very time consuming if you have many other parties involved using DWG, SAT or other formats you want to link.

Is there a easier way to transfer elements ON COORDINATS from rvt to a rfa?
Why is shared coordinats only available when linking in rvt and not in any other mode?

Hi there.

'DWG linking' and 'Shared Coordinates' insertion option are deliberately disabled for Families. This is because these functions are defeat the purpose of using families which are inserted at specific locations in Revit projects.

By using Shared coordinates, you would be inserting your elements in a specific point in space relative to the project. In this case I would recommend to create a sub-project (rvt) instead of a family and hence insert or link this project file into your main project. You will then be able to use the 'Shared Coordinates' feature.

Hope this helps.

I am not able to test this solution. Can you confirm that sections are made correctly with the right depth when this technique is used?

1. Link sat or dwg in rvt.
2. Save the rvt.
3. Link in design rvt to this rvt with imports.

Thanks

Btw. Klaus
DWG link in family is , in my system (2014b2) not disabled.
So it would not make much sense (infra GIs speaking) to disable coordinate system for this particular purpose.

.. Not disabled for a in place generic model to be more precise..

I was hoping there would be more logical way to insert and link and use dwg into revit to get to work with both worlds (dwg and rvt) in infra designing complex geometry.

Now it nearly impossible to use section and view tools in combination with coordinates. You have to choose or do the same operation of linking twice. I really do not understand why disabling options would help this.. ??😓

Some more clarification from a development point of view I would really appreciate. Any revit for infra specialist

btw Linking dwg in a separate rvt does not bring this any further. Not a significant step for solving this issue.
