Is it possible for a family to read information from another family or object? For example, I insert a family that attaches to an HSS X-brace, can a parameter in the inserted family read the size of the HSS and input the dimension?

Can this be done with a shared parameter? It would have to be specific to the member.

Not typically. There are some specific family behaviors similar to this, such as mechanical Duct Fittings, but there is no way to simulate this kind of functionality with other families.
