Graphical Column Schedule not displaying as desired for concrete columns

We are struggling with building live concrete column schedules in Revit. Our concrete projects typically do not use grid systems and all columns are identified by column tags. Revit has a “Graphical Column Schedule” option that works well with grid systems and steel columns where the centerline of a column does not change. But whenever the concrete columns change in size or alignment it prompts a new column in the graphical schedule, this can quickly get very unorganized, long and messy looking. Due to this reason we have avoided using live schedules and have been importing “fake” Excel schedules into our model.

Is there any way to build the graphical schedule using a unique column tag and not grid intersections as a reference? This would help create a single run in the live schedule, even when the column changes in size or alignment. If graphical schedules are not possible for this use case, do you have any other ideas to create live concrete column schedules? We also looked into building a general Revit schedule to display column parameters, but it gets too complicated for large projects and unfortunately, the Revit schedule features are too restrictive for us to get the display we desire.

Here are a few examples:

  • Using Revit Graphical Column Schedule Feature:  We would love to use this, and this works well for steel column projects but was too messy for concrete jobs since we don’t use grids and when the columns change in size it automatically generates a new column line. We tried many schedules overrides and customizations but concluded that this option would not work for our purposes. See the example below where the same column 2 gets multiple entries as the sizes change. See Below:
  • col.jpg
  • Tabulated method using general schedules:  This method works well with Revit API to transfer column parameter values into Revit and update column data from excel to Revit and all info is live. But it results in too much-repeated information, multiple tables, and does not allow us to view all columns in a single view.

We would love to get your thoughts on this issue. Thanks!

unfortunately graphical column schedule has limited options and it is useless for designers in my case

i use shared parameters for columns and schedules/Quantities to make column schedule for rebar i use text shared parameter

this is one of the most common problems in revit with most of the users

another way that you make call outs of section details for all type of columns and use tag and dims then put it directly to a sheet and it will not be like a schedule
