Floor edges showing incorrectly (using phases) - existing taking priority over new

Hi Revit community, I have a question about floor/slab edges and phases. Below is a snap of the issue; the existing structure is taking precident over the new structure. I do alot of phased projects, existing, demo, new and this issue keeps popping up in various ways.

End goal: How do I make the new slab edge show over the existing?  Without using LW tool.

for context here's the 3 stages.

Existing :

Demo: ideally would want to show the edge on demo slab as well.

I do not think it is possible the only way I can think of this is other than unjoining is to have a Different Material for each slab even if it was just an edited name so not identical

This is the exact work around I discovered last night.

Annoying having to create duplicate familes but it's better than not being able to see the structure that's actually getting built.
One would think that New Structure should take printing precedent over existing.
