error when pasting in family environment

I am creating a family using the generic model template. The family is for a complex beam which has already been drawn in elevation in AutoCAD. I copy this beam to clip board. When I come to create my family in Revit, I wanted to paste the beam into the family and change it to suit my case. The problem is when I come to paste this, when I am creating the family I get this message: Can't copy between Family and Project. Can anyone please tell me how to overcome this problem? Many thanks

so your trying to copy the Autocad line work into a Revit family, correct. is the Beam just 2D line work or is it a 3d Modeled AEC Boject? why not just use the tools in the Revit Structural Framing - Beams and Braces family and adjust the parameters/profiles as needed? probably a lot less heartache.....

you can try making a block (DWG) of the linework and then use the Import CAD tool to import the resulting DWG into the family.

Thank You for your reply. I had to make a blank drawing in AutoCad with only the block made of the 2d line work of the beam. then import that into the family. this worked. but I was hoping to paste the 2d line work which I copied to clip board straight into the family. I guess you can't do that?

You cannot clipboard copy paste across different platforms. You cannot even do that between different Revit sessions.
