In the course of creating extrusions I had to create a handful number of reference planes.

Subsequently I need to delete these temporary reference planes.

How to delete the ref planes................

If you created the reference planes while creating the model in place family, then the reference planes exist within that model in place family and so you'll need to go into that and select to edit the extrusion and then you'll be able to delete those reference planes.  Let me know if that helped.

Edit the Family if they are in there if in the model then Window Select > Filter > Untick everything other than Reference Planes > Apply > Delete key on keyboard

Alternatively you can right click once they are selected and choose "In entire model" if they are on other views
