Cut a slanted column for a splice using a line.

Hello, I'm trying to slice a column for a splice. I need the splice to be at a certain place. When I use the cut tool, it seems to want to cut it above or below where I need it. Is there any way to cut using a line?

How about Split Element(SL) of the modify panel?

if you need to cut the sloped column at an angle other than perp. consider

cutting a column with a reference plane. Note that  The short side of the column will always be the one “cut off” 

If you want the long side cut off?
just move the ref plane (just like a beam see image)
